Feeding biology of two brachionid rotifers: Brachionus quadridentatus and Brachionus plicatilis

Brachionus quadridentatus and Brachionus plicatilis were examined in laboratory cultures to investigate their (1) food requirements and (2) ability to select particles on the basis of size. Growth experiments showed that the Chlorophyceans Nannochloris sp. and Chlorella vulgaris possess good nutritional value for these rotifers.

Rapid adaptation of Brachionus angularis (Rotifera) to invasion by Brachionus calyciflorus

To test the hypothesis that Brachionus angularis can rapidly develop local adaptation to invasion by other monogonont rotifers, replicate populations of B. angularis were exposed to two environments invaded by B. calyciflorus at different inoculation densities and an environment free from invaders.

Male discrimination of female Brachionus plicatilis Müller and Brachionus rotundiformis Tschugunoff (Rotifera)

An analysis of mating behavior of three Brachionus plicatilis O.F. Muller and three Brachionus rotundiformis Tschugunoff strains showed that reproductive isolation exists between strains of these sibling species. An atypical B. rotundiformis strain appears to share some characteristics with both B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis strains.
