The periodical literature of demography and Bradford's law
International Journal of Information Management, 1986This paper presents a statistical analysis of the journals and papers abstracted in Population Index, 1984. A Bradford distribution is fitted to the papers in all the journals regularly scanned by Population Index, as well as in the journals specifically designated as demography.

A relationship between two forms of Bradford's law
Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1978AbstractIf g(x) is the number of journals having x references, we speak of a size‐frequency relationship. If f(r) is the number of references in a journal of rank r, we speak of a rank‐frequency relationship. In the former we can estimate the number of journals, given the number of references; in the latter we can estimate the number of references ...

The pitfalls of Bradford’s law
Revista de Biblioteconomia de Brasília, 1988Trata das diferenças entre o modelo teórico e os estudos empíricos da lei de Bradford e as conseqüentes distorções dos resultados destes últimos, quando a lei é mal utilizada.

“Power law” version of Bradford's law: Statistical tests and methods of estimation
Scientometrics, 1989Is is shown, using rigorous statistical tests, that the number of journals (J) carryingp papers in a given subject can be expressed as a simple power law functionJ(p)=K p−γ, K and γ being constants. The standard maximum likelihood method of estimating γ has been suitably modified to take acoount of the fact thatp is a discrete integer variable.

Application of Bradford's Law of Scattering to Synthetic BiologyLiterature
2021This study aimed to examine Bradford's law of scattering on the global synthetic biology literature output published between 2005 to 2019. The authors used the publications data obtained from Web of Science database for the present study. The total data set consists of 8411 journal articles and 1453 journals.

Two components of a causal explanation of Bradford's law
Journal of Information Science, 1996One can suppose that Bradford's law is valid for all scientific fields. As an implication of this general validity and because of limitations of space, journals must differ in their subject structure, and every journal must have its own hierarchy of subjects, conforming to a Bradford or a similar distribution.

The Haitun dichotomy and the relevance of Bradford's law
Journal of Information Science, 1984In a critical review of all the empirical laws of bibliometrics and scientometrics, the Russian statistician S.D. Haitun has shown that the application of modern statistical theory to social science data is 'inadmissible', i.e. it 'does not work'. Haitun thus points to the need to develop a wholly new statistical theory for the social sciences in ...

“Bradford's law” and the relationship between ecology and biogeography
Scientometrics, 1990Core journals in ecology and biogeography were identified on the basis of Bradford's Law of Scattering, and their degree of overlap measured as percentage Similarity (PS). Areas of common interest between the two disciplines, as well as of uniqueness, were determined through bibliometric analysis of these core journals.
