Chronic Pain in Parkinson’s Disease: Prevalence, Sex Differences, Regional Anatomy and Comorbidities

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Chronic pain affected 66.2% of 10,631 individuals with Parkinson's disease, with higher prevalence and severity in females. Pain most often involved the buttocks, lower back, neck, and knees, and was linked to depression, sleep disorders, and osteoarthritis.

Exploring Nasal Structural‐Microbial Interactions in Multiple Sclerosis‐Associated Olfactory Impairment

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Olfactory dysfunction is frequently observed in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS); however, its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To date, no studies have directly examined the nasal mucosal microbiota in MS. This study aimed to explore potential relationships among olfactory function, nasal microbiota composition,

Neuroprotection by selective neuronal deletion of Atg7 in neonatal brain injury. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Perinatal asphyxia induces neuronal cell death and brain injury, and is often associated with irreversible neurological deficits in children. There is an urgent need to elucidate the neuronal death mechanisms occurring after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI)

Nerve Excitability in Asymptomatic Carriers and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients With C9orf72

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective We investigated the effects of C9orf72 mutation carriership on peripheral nerve excitability in asymptomatic individuals from families with a history of C9orf72 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and patients. Methods We included 47 asymptomatic individuals from families with a history of C9orf72 ALS, of whom 23 were carriers (C9 ...

Computed Tomography Angiography as Ancillary Testing for Death Determination by Neurologic Criteria: A Technical Review

open access: yesTomography
The determination of death by neurological criteria (DNC) stands as a pivotal aspect of medical practice, involving a nuanced clinical diagnosis. Typically, it comes into play following a devastating brain injury, signalling the irreversible cessation of

Blocking Complement Factor B Activation Reduces Renal Injury and Inflammation in a Rat Brain Death Model

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Introduction: The majority of kidneys used for transplantation are retrieved from brain-dead organ donors. In brain death, the irreversible loss of brain functions results in hemodynamic instability, hormonal changes and immunological activation ...

Neuraminidase-activated microglia compromise the viability of ependymocytes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Neuraminidase (NA) is a sialidase present in the envelope/wall of some virus/bacteria responsible for brain infections, such as flu, mumps or meningitis. The intracerebroventricular injection of NA in the rat brain provokes ependymal detachment and death,
