Brain edema associated with dilatation of the brain extracellular space has a number of causes, but it is termed “vasogenic” if the major cause is damage to the bloodbrain barrier (BBB). Vasogenic edema occurs in tumors, trauma, vasculitis, a cold lesion, acute hypertension, infarction, radiation, and osmotic BBB opening.
