By mimicking the ion‐accelerating effect of ion channel receptors in neuron membranes, a biomaterials‐based ionic hydrogel (BIH) is developed, which offers a high ionic conductivity of 7.04 S m−1, outperforming conventional chitosan, cellulose, agarose, starch, and gelatin based ionic hydrogels.

Cortical Response to Acute Implantation of the Utah Optrode Array in Macaque Cortex
Delivering light deep into the brain over a large volume while causing minimal tissue damage is a major challenge for non‐human primate optogenetics. This study evaluates Utah Optrode Array designs in vivo, revealing how changes in shank geometry, surface texture, and insertion parameters minimize acute damage—offering a path toward high‐precision ...

Traumatic brain injuries: a neuropsychological review
The best predictor of functional outcome in victims of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a neuropsychological evaluation. An exponential growth of research into TBI has focused on diagnosis and treatment.

Measurement of Intraspinal Pressure After Spinal Cord Injury: Technical Note from the Injured Spinal Cord Pressure Evaluation Study. [PDF]
Intracranial pressure (ICP) is routinely measured in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). We describe a novel technique that allowed us to monitor intraspinal pressure (ISP) at the injury site in 14 patients who had severe acute traumatic ...

Nonclinical evaluation of biological responses to implanted medical devices and combination products in animals is required to predict possible outcomes and risks in patients. This paper describes globally accepted pathology “best practices” that 1) effectively address ISO standards and current regulatory guidance for medical device development and 2 ...

The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

Quantification of multi-lumen blood vessel pathology in chronic traumatic encephalopathy [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disorder that had been largely ignored for decades since its initial characterization in 1928 by Dr. H. Martland. Within the last several years, a dramatic increase of attention in
