Brake squeal analysis by finite elements
International Journal of Vehicle Design, 1999<div class="htmlview paragraph">An approximate analysis method for brake squeal is presented. Using MSC/NASTRAN a geometric nonlinear solution is run using a friction stiffness matrix to model the contact between the pad and rotor. The friction coefficient can be pressure dependent.

Reducing Aircraft Brake Squeal with a Damped Brake-Rod
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2000<div class="htmlview paragraph">In multi-brake aircraft landing gear systems, it is common for brake rod bending to participate in brake squeal vibration modes. Experiments have proven that damping the bending mode of the rod can reduce brake vibration.

Brake squeal has become an increasing concern to the automotive industry because of warranty costs and the requirement for continued interior vehicle noise reduction. Most research has been directed to either analytical and experimental studies of brake squeal mechanisms or the prediction of brake squeal propensity using finite element methods.

Brake Squeal – Digital Twinning of a Brake Dynamometer
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2023<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Brake squeal is a common phenomenon across all types of vehicles. It becomes prominent in the absence of other noise sources, as in the case of electric vehicles. Earlier simulation attempts date back to late nineties and early 2000s.

Some Drum Brake Squeal Mechanisms
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1995<div class="htmlview paragraph">The analysis of a two-dimensional drum brake shows that there are four mechanisms present in generating drum brake squeal. The analysis shows that the unstable modes from the mechanisms contain waves. These waves move in different directions.

Bifurcation Analysis for Brake Squeal
ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, Volume 2, 2010This article presents a perturbation approach for the bifurcation analysis of MDoF vibration systems with gyroscopic and circulatory contributions, as they naturally arise from problems involving moving continua and sliding friction. Based on modal data of the underlying linear system, a multiple scales technique is utilized in order to find equations ...

Fast Characterization of Brake Squeal Behavior
SAE International Journal of Passenger Cars - Mechanical Systems, 2009<div class="htmlview paragraph">The last decades have shown extensive efforts on the investigation of automotive disk brake squeal. The origin of brake squeal is seen in self-excited vibrations, caused by the friction forces transferring energy from the rotating disk into the brake system. Based on a very simple model, Popp et al.

Automotive Brake Squeal Simulation and Optimization
SAE International Journal of Passenger Cars - Mechanical Systems, 2016<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This work carries out complex modal analyses and optimizations to resolve an 1800 Hz front brake squeal issue encountered in a vehicle program development phase. The stability theory of complex modes for brake squeal simulation is briefly explained.

Experimental Study on Disc Brake Squeal
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1993<div class="htmlview paragraph">In order to determine the mechanism of brake squeal generation, six natural squeal odes were identified and the vibrations of the rotor, backplate and lining were measured for each mode by means of accelerometers.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The results show that an important factor is the ...

Experimental Research on Brake Squeal
2011Since many years experimental researches have been performed in order to get an insight into the issue of brake squeal. This work presents an innovative test setup for analyzing friction-excited vibrations and squeal triggering mechanisms. The investigated brake system showed brake squeal issues at certain operating points.
