Ship resistance in thick brash ice

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1980
Abstract The mechanical properties of thick brash ice are considered, with special emphasis on the friction angle ф for a linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The static equilibrium of a uniform brash layer is discussed, and the internal stresses are given for neutral, active, and passive stress states.

Resistance to ship-hull motion through brash ice

Cold Regions Science and Technology, 1985
Abstract A three-metre long model hull of a tanker ship with simplified bow shapes was towed through a simulated brash ice channel in the model-ice towing tank of the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research (IHR). The study was to investigate resistance forces encountered by commercial ships, with hulls characterized by a long parallel middlebody ...

Ice-Tank Observations on Barge Resistance in Brash-Ice

SNAME 25th American Towing Tank Conference, 1998
In many instances barges in ice-covered navigation channels must move through brash ice. The present paper presents ice-tank observations and data indicating the levels of resistance likely to be encountered by barges in brash ice. The ice-tank data are compared with a set of full-scale data obtained with barges moving through icecovered channels in ...

Discrete Element Simulation of Ships Navigating Through Brash Ice Channels

OTC Arctic Technology Conference, 2018
Abstract The paper describes a simulation tool for simulating the transit of ships through brash ice channels, based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Fundamentals of the method are given, including contact detection and forces calculation.

Thermodynamic Modeling of the Ice Channel Evolution Taking into Account the Brash Ice Accumulation Features

Russian Meteorology and Hydrology
The issue of thermodynamic modeling of brash ice accumulation in an ice channel is considered. The determining influence of the fill factor (or porosity) on the calculation results has been revealed. Based on theoretical assumptions and field data, an approximation of the fill factor vertical distribution has been proposed.
