1970Chapter VII dealt principally with fluid-induced forces and where the fluid motion appeared in the form of surface gravity waves, only non-breaking waves were considered. In this chapter, our concern is with the forces induced by waves breaking on structures.

Abstract forced symmetry breaking
1996We consider abstract forced symmetry breaking problems of the type F(x,λ) = y, x ≈ O(x0), λ ≈ λ0, y ≈ O. It is supposed that for all λ the maps F(·,λ) are equivariant with respect to representations of a given compact Lie group, that F(x0, λ0) = 0 and, hence, that F(x,λ0) = 0 for all elements x of the group orbit O(x0) of x0.

Breaking wave forces and velocity fields

Forced Symmetry Breaking from O(3)
1992Here we consider the flow near a manifold of equilibria of a specific orbit type of an O(3)-equivariant ordinary differential equation if we break the symmetry of the underlying system. Wind-Forced Shelf Break Upwelling
1983An analysis of current meter and hydrographic data collected from an array of moorings situated at the shelf break off Nova Scotia is presented. In particular, the focus is on the ocean response to moderate (10 to 20 m s-1), transient winds of two or more days duration blowing parallel to the local bathymetry.
