Fold catastrophe in breaking waves

open access: yesCommunications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation
We present a dynamical-systems perspective on wave breaking for ideal incompressible free-surface flows. By tracking the most energetic hotspot on the wave surface, we find that near breaking the surface slope m evolves on a fast timescale governed by the small parameter epsilon = (partial_z u)^(-1), the inverse vertical velocity gradient at the ...

Dependence of acoustic noise emission on the dissipated energy of plunging waves

open access: yesOceanologia, 2020
Summary: The results of experiments performed in a wave flume designed to explore associations between the dissipation of surface wave energy during breaking and acoustic noise emission are presented.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and Nambu–Goldstone bosons in quantum many-body systems

open access: yes, 2010
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is a general principle that constitutes the underlying concept of a vast number of physical phenomena ranging from ferromagnetism and superconductivity in condensed matter physics to the Higgs mechanism in the standard model

Controlled Engineering of 2D Alkali‐Iron‐Chloride Compounds and Lateral Quantum Heterostructures Within Confined Graphene Nanoreactors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a programmable atomic engineering strategy for 2D materials using Å‐scale nanoreactors formed by bilayer graphene (BLG) intercalation. A new class of alkali‐iron‐chloride compounds, along with lateral heterostructures composed of monolayer alkali halides and iron chlorides, is revealed.

Effects of surfzone wave transformation on swash dynamics

open access: yes, 2012
Swash oscillations on two natural beaches were measured to show that the shape and magnitude of energy spectra can be largely dependent on processes occurring inside the surfzone.

Interface Effects in Ultrathin Silicon on Insulator Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work establishes a systematic framework to discriminate how bulk and interface phenomena affect charge transport in ultrathin P‐doped silicon‐on‐insulator (SOI) films. For Si films below 15 nm, electrical characterization demonstrates that interface states drive charge transport, shifting the metal‐insulator transition (MIT) critical dopant ...

Submicron Metasurface Reconfigured Multiband Smart Windows

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a submicron metasurface reconfigured multiband thermochromic smart window. By integrating subwavelength nanostructures into a Fabry−Perot resonator configuration, it mitigates conventional trade‐offs to simultaneously deliver high luminous transmittance and robust solar heating and radiative cooling modulation capabilities ...
