Surf zone currents and influence on surfability
Surfing headlands are shallow and exposed coastal features that provide a specific form of breaking wave allowing a board-rider to ride on the unbroken wave face.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking in Gauge Theories---In Search of Clarification [PDF]
The paper investigates the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetries in gauge theories from a philosophical angle. Local gauge symmetry itself cannot break spontaneously in quantized gauge theories according to Elitzur's theorem---even though the notion ...

Magnetic doping of the topological insulator Bi2Te3 with erbium adatoms induces out‐of‐plane magnetism and breaks time‐reversal symmetry, opening a Dirac gap and driving a Fermi surface transition from hexagonal to star‐of‐David geometry. Microscopy, spectroscopy, and magnetic dichroism reveal atomically controlled magnetic interactions that tailor the

Pulse evolution without wave breaking in a strongly dissipative-dispersive laser system
We report on pulse evolution without wave breaking in a strongly dissipative-dispersive laser system where pulses encounter significant amounts of positive and negative dispersions.

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Tsunamis: Non-Breaking and Breaking Solitary Wave Run-Up [PDF]
This study considers the run-up of non-breaking and breaking solitary waves on a smooth sloping beach. A non-linear theory and a numerical model solving the non-linear shallow water equations (NLSW) were developed to model this physical process.

The Impact of Topographic Steepness on Tidal Dissipation at Bumpy Topography
Breaking internal waves are an important contributor to mixing in the stratified ocean interior. We use two-dimensional, nonhydrostatic numerical simulations to examine the breaking of internal waves generated by tidal flow over sinusoidal bottom ...
