Prediction of breast cancer risk among women of the Mariana Islands: the BRISK retrospective case–control study

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2022
Objectives To develop a breast cancer risk prediction model for Chamorro and Filipino women of the Mariana Islands and compare its performance to that of the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool (BCRAT).Design Case–control study.Setting Clinics/facilities ...

Obesity and breast cancer risk [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Reproduction, 1997
Being overweight appears to be associated with a higher risk of post-menopausal breast cancer in most studies. Although the relative risk of breast cancer related to Quetelet's index is generally weak (range 1.1-1.9 in the major cohort studies), some studies have found that timing of weight gain and body fat distribution could be more significant ...

Genetic variants at chromosomes 2q35, 5p12, 6q25.1, 10q26.13, and 16q12.1 influence the risk of breast cancer in men. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Male breast cancer accounts for approximately 1% of all breast cancer. To date, risk factors for male breast cancer are poorly defined, but certain risk factors and genetic features appear common to both male and female breast cancer.

Neutralization of the PTX3/CD44 axis suppresses TGF‐β1 signaling in kidney fibrosis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study investigates how the PTX3/CD44 axis promotes kidney fibrosis by activating TGF‐β1 signaling. We demonstrate that the neutralizing antibody WHC‐001 effectively inhibits this pathway, suppressing myofibroblast activation and partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Going viral − Virus‐targeting nanobodies for research, diagnostics and therapy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The increasing prevalence of viral diseases represents a major threat for global human health. Nanobodies, small binding fragments derived from camelid heavy‐chain antibodies, offer versatile tools for viral research, diagnostics, and antiviral therapy.

Breast cancers arising in high mammographic density tissue harbor tumor-promoting immune profiles

open access: yesnpj Breast Cancer
Epidemiological studies have shown that high mammographic density (HMD) is a strong risk factor for breast cancer (BC) and is associated with poor prognosis.

Breast cancer risk based on adapted IBIS prediction model in Slovenian women aged 40–49 years - could it be better?

open access: yesRadiology and Oncology, 2020
The aim of the study was to assess the proportion of women that would be classified as at above-average risk of breast cancer based on the 10 year-risk prediction of the Slovenian breast cancer incidence rate (S-IBIS) program in two presumably above ...

Evaluation of variation in the phosphoinositide-3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha oncogene and breast cancer risk. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
BACKGROUND: Somatic mutations in phosphoinositide-3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) are frequent in breast tumours and have been associated with oestrogen receptor (ER) expression, human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 overexpression, lymph ...

How structural disorder and polyelectrolyte properties of prothymosin α enable its large interactome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, complexes of the fully disordered and highly negatively charged prothymosin α are collected, described, and discussed. Linked to its poly‐electrostatic character, prothymosin α engages a large interactome through multiple different binding modes ranging from fully disordered complexes to short linear motif (SLiM)‐driven interactions ...
