Surgery on primary melanoma of the breast [PDF]

open access: yesTranslational Cancer Research, 2019
Malignant melanoma of the breast (MMB) is a rare disease that accounts for 3-5% of all melanomas. It can be expressed as a metastatic mammary gland or primary mammary melanin of the mammary gland. Primary MMB (PMMB) can be divided into two types: parenchymal melanoma without skin involvement and melanoma involving skin on the breast.

The atypical KRASQ22K mutation directs TGF‐β response towards partial epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in patient‐derived colorectal cancer tumoroids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TGF‐β has a complex role in cancer, exhibiting both tumor‐suppressive and tumor‐promoting properties. Using a series of differentiated tumoroids, derived from different stages and mutational background of colorectal cancer patients, we replicate this duality of TGF‐β in vitro. Notably, the atypical but highly aggressive KRASQ22K mutation rendered early‐

A Case of Autoimmune Neutropenia in a Patient Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery

open access: yesCase Reports in Surgery
Autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) is an extremely rare condition, and there is no effective treatment option for this disorder. AIN can cause major complications in patients with perioperative infection. Herein, we present a 56-year-old female patient who was

Numerics on the trajectory of nodule displacements by external compressions of the breast [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
We present a fast and reliable algorithm that gives precise location of breast tumours for a partial mastectomy. Our algorithm is fully implemented in the Surface Evolver, which is a general-purpose simulator of physical experiments. By starting from the X-rays images that show a tumour one takes its 2D coordinates in each view.

Chemoresistome mapping in individual breast cancer patients unravels diversity in dynamic transcriptional adaptation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study used longitudinal transcriptomics and gene‐pattern classification to uncover patient‐specific mechanisms of chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer. Findings reveal preexisting drug‐tolerant states in primary tumors and diverse gene rewiring patterns across patients, converging on a few dysregulated functional modules. Despite receiving the

Aberrant expression of nuclear prothymosin α contributes to epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nuclear prothymosin α inhibits epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer by increasing Smad7 acetylation and competing with Smad2 for binding to SNAI1, TWIST1, and ZEB1 promoters. In early‐stage cancer, ProT suppresses TGF‐β‐induced EMT, while its loss in the nucleus in late‐stage cancer leads to enhanced EMT and poor prognosis.

Cold Atmospheric Plasma discharged in Water and its Potential Use in Cancer Therapy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been emerged as a novel technology for cancer treatment. CAP can directly treat cells and tissue but such direct application is limited to skin or can be invoked as a supplement during open surgery. In this study we report indirect plasma treatment using CAP discharged in DI water using three gases as carriers (argon ...

Early metastasis is characterized by Gr1+ cell dysregulation and is inhibited by immunomodulatory nanoparticles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast cancer metastasis is associated with myeloid cell dysregulation and the lung‐specific accumulation of tumor‐supportive Gr1+ cells. Gr1+ cells support metastasis, in part, through a CHI3L1‐mediated mechanism, which can be targeted and inhibited with cargo‐free, polymeric nanoparticles.

Improved resection margins in breast-conserving surgery using Terahertz Pulsed imaging data [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
New statistical methods were employed to improve the ability to distinguish benign from malignant breast tissue ex vivo in a recent study. The ultimately aim was to improve the intraoperative assessment of positive tumour margins in breast-conserving surgery (BCS), potentially reducing patient re-operation rates.
