Breeding without Breeding: Is a Complete Pedigree Necessary for Efficient Breeding?

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Complete pedigree information is a prerequisite for modern breeding and the ranking of parents and offspring for selection and deployment decisions. DNA fingerprinting and pedigree reconstruction can substitute for artificial matings, by allowing parentage delineation of naturally produced offspring.

Physiological breeding

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Plant Biology, 2016
Physiological breeding crosses parents with different complex but complementary traits to achieve cumulative gene action for yield, while selecting progeny using remote sensing, possibly in combination with genomic selection. Physiological approaches have already demonstrated significant genetic gains in Australia and several developing countries of ...

Cassava Breeding I: The Value of Breeding Value [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2016
Breeding cassava relies on several selection stages (single row trial-SRT; preliminary; advanced; and uniform yield trials-UYT). This study uses data from 14 years of evaluations. From more than 20,000 genotypes initially evaluated only 114 reached the last stage.

Breeding and exploitation of prolific breeds in Czechoslovakia

open access: yesAgricultural and Food Science, 1988
In the years 1971—1979 many experiments were conducted in order to elucidate problems of meat production increase in sheep. Ewes of native breeds (Mutton Merino = M, Improved Wallachian = I) were mated to rams of prolific breeds (Finnsheep = F, Romanov = R), producing F1 crossbred females.
