Inferences in a univariate normal linear model with two components of variance are discussed from a Bayesian perspective. When variances are known, three scenarios are considered: unknown “nuisance” parameters (β) and breeding values (u), unknown β and known u, and unknown u and known β.

Culling is inevitable in breeding trials. It removes individuals with undesirable traits but also introduces bias in breeding value estimation since we cannot ensure the population normality assumption. Here a stochastic simulation was used to study the impact of culling on the precision of breeding value estimation.
