Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Maximizing Genetic Response in Breeding Schemes of Dairy Cattle with Constraints on Variance of Response

open access: yes, 1994
Predicted genetic progress in dairy cattle breeding schemes was maximized with the variances of selection responses constrained, i.e., restricted effective population sizes. This restriction would also lead to schemes with acceptable rates of inbreeding (

Best Linear Unbiased Prediction of Genomic Breeding Values Using a Trait-Specific Marker-Derived Relationship Matrix [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background: With the availability of high density whole-genome single nucleotide polymorphism chips, genomic selection has become a promising method to estimate genetic merit with potentially high accuracy for animal, plant and aquaculture species of ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Innovations in the dairy chain: bio-economic analysis of novel breeding opportunities

open access: yes, 2011
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the dairy sector to move from producing bulk dairy commodities towards producing specialized dairy products aimed at niche markets. Dairy farmers consider shifting from commodity milk to raw milk with

Identifying gene expression signatures for risk stratification of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A novel signature integrating genome‐wide analysis with clinical factors predicts recurrence in stage II colorectal cancer and enables a new risk stratification to guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical risk stratification for postoperative recurrence in patients with pathological stage II (pStage II) colorectal cancer (CRC) is essential ...

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Adaptive potential of spring covered oats (Avena sativa L.) according to green biomass under the conditions of Kirov Province

open access: yesТруды по прикладной ботанике, генетике и селекции
Background. Development of high-yielding cultivars with high quality of their products is one of the main tasks of plant breeders. Today, the most valuable cultivars are those with high adaptability to stressful conditions of cultivation.

Implementation of SCC breeding values in Italian Jersey breed

open access: yes, 2021
In the framework of the LATTeco project, ANAFIJ (Associazione Nazionale Allevatori della Razza Frisona e Jersey Italiana) has been working on improving animal welfare, biodiversity and sustainability. Focusing on animal welfare, ANAFIJ has implemented a genetic evaluation for somatic cell count (SCC) in the Italian Jersey population.
