Brightest Cluster Galaxy Alignments in Merging Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2019
Abstract The orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and their host clusters tend to be aligned, but the mechanism driving this is not clear. To probe the role of cluster mergers in this process, we quantify alignments of 38 BCGs in 22 clusters undergoing major mergers (up to ∼1 Gyr after first pericenter).

H i absorption associated with Norma’s brightest cluster galaxy [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
ESO 137-G006 is the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of the cool-core and dynamically young Norma cluster. We discover an atomic hydrogen (H I) absorption line associated with this BCG using the Australia Telescope Compact Array.

The VLT-MUSE and ALMA view of the MACS 1931.8-2635 brightest cluster galaxy [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics, 2021
We reveal the importance of ongoing in situ star formation in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the massive cool-core CLASH cluster MACS 1931.8-2635 at a redshift of z = 0.35 by analysing archival VLT-MUSE optical integral field spectroscopy. Using a

A BRIGHTEST CLUSTER GALAXY WITH AN EXTREMELY LARGE FLAT CORE [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2012
Hubble Space Telescope images of the galaxy cluster A2261, obtained as part of the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble, show that the brightest galaxy in the cluster, A2261-BCG, has the largest core yet detected in any galaxy.

MAJOR CLUSTER MERGERS AND THE LOCATION OF THE BRIGHTEST CLUSTER GALAXY [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2014
Using a large N-body cosmological simulation combined with a subgrid treatment of galaxy formation, we study the formation and evolution of the galaxy and cluster population in a comoving volume (100 Mpc)^3 in a LCDM universe. At z = 0, our computational volume contains 1788 clusters with mass M_cl > 1.1x10^12 Msun, including 18 massive clusters ...

The Evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2003
In this contribution we review the properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and discuss the impact that X-ray cluster selection is having on their use as cosmological probes. BCGs form a unique galaxy population. They are located near the gravitational centre of galaxy clusters and are the most massive galaxies in the universe, being some 10 ...
