Brillouin light scattering during shearing of complex fluids

open access: yesOptics Express, 2021
A setup for the optical measurement of elastic properties during the flow of complex fluids is presented. Brillouin light scattering and rotational rheology are combined in order to simultaneously measure the high-frequency longitudinal elastic modulus in a classical rheometer along with the zero-shear viscosity.

Observation of hypersonic phononic crystal effects in porous silicon superlattices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Brillouin light scattering experiments were carried out on porous silicon superlattices with modulation wavelengths in the range 37–167 nm. Phonon frequencies deduced from the Brillouin spectra show good agreement with those obtained from an elastic ...

Lagrangian description of Brillouin scattering and electrostriction in nanoscale optical waveguides

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
The diffraction of light by sound waves is known as Brillouin scattering. In optical waveguides, Brillouin scattering can arise from both bulk contributions, modelled by photoelasticity, and surface contributions, which are due to the waveguide ...

Time-domain Brillouin scattering assisted by diffraction gratings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Absorption of ultrashort laser pulses in a metallic grating deposited on a transparent sample launches coherent compression/dilatation acoustic pulses in directions of different orders of acoustic diffraction. Their propagation is detected by the delayed

Research on the System of Pulse Synthesis Pre-pump Rayleigh BOTDA technology

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2015
The conventional Rayleigh scattering Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (Rayleigh BOTDA) system adopted the leakage light ahead of the pump pulse to generate Rayleigh back-scattering light.

Brillouin scattering of phonons in complex materials

open access: yesAdvances in Physics: X, 2018
Initially, the theory of propagation of long-wavelength acoustic phonons and Brillouin scattering of laser light in condensed matter is concisely summarized. Then, the case of two relevant classes of complex materials in which Brillouin scattering can be

Quantum theory for parametric interactions of light and hypersound [PDF]

open access: yes, 1965
The problem of energy exchange between two electro-magnetic modes of different frequencies and an acoustic mode is formulated and solved. The results of the quantum mechanical analysis are also analyzed in classical terms and are found to be consistent ...

On-chip inter-modal Brillouin scattering

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Here, Kittlauset al. demonstrate stimulated inter-modal Brillouin scattering on-chip. Through this process, a Brillouin interaction couples light fields that propagate in distinct spatial modes of a Brillouin-active silicon waveguide, which may allow a ...
