Survival and growth of early-juvenile American lobsters Homarus americanus through their 1st season while fed diets of mesoplankton, microplankton, and frozen brine shrimp [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
American lobsters Homarus america.nus were fed diets of mesoplankton in filtered seawater, meso/ microplankton combination in filtered seawater, and frozen brine shrimp in both filtered and unfiltered seawater to determine if mesoplankton diets could ...

An integrated experimental and computational framework for modeling creep behavior in shale rocks induced by chemo-mechanical loading [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Creep deformation in shale rocks is an important factor in many applications, such as the sustainability of geostructures, wellbore stability, evaluation of land subsidence, CO2 storage, toxic waste containment, and hydraulic fracturing. One mechanism leading to this time-dependent deformation under a constant load is the dissolution/formation ...

A Visible Light‐Responsive Hydrogel to Study the Effect of Dynamic Tissue Stiffness on Cellular Mechanosensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A visible light‐responsive polyacrylamide‐azobenzene hydrogel enables safe, reversible stiffness control for studying cell mechanobiology without harmful UV exposure. This approach reveals stem cells respond rapidly to mechanical changes, showing altered shape and protein distribution within one hour.

Reject Brine Management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Desalination has been growing rapidly as an industry and as a field of research that combines engineering and science to develop innovative and economical means for water desalting. Many countries in the world, especially in the Middle East, depend heavily on seawater desalination as a major source of drinking water and have invested considerable ...

Advanced Nano‐Fibrillated Cellulose/Modified MXene Janus Membrane for Continuous 24‐h Water‐Power Co‐Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The Janus membrane integrates a superhydrophilic CNF@CTAB‐MXene layer with a superhydrophobic PTFE layer, enabling efficient solar‐driven water evaporation and electricity generation. It achieves an evaporation rate of 1.51 kg m−2 h−1 with excellent salt resistance and long‐term stability.

EOR as sequestration: Geoscience perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) has a development and operational history several decades longer than geologic sequestration of CO2 designed to benefit the atmosphere and provides much of the experience on which confidence in the newer technology is ...

Built‐In Electric Field in 2D/2D LDH/Antimonene Heterostructure to Induce Stable β‐NiOOH at Ultralow Potential for Cost‐Effective Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this paper, a built‐in electric field (BEF) strategy is proposed to fabricate NiFe‐LDH/antimonene heterostructure as bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The formed BEF generates a local potential that reduces the potential for the formation of β‐NiOOH, thereby enabling ultra‐low ...

The role of advection and dispersion in the rock matrix on the transport of leaking CO2-saturated brine along a fractured zone [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
CO2 that is injected into a geological storage reservoir can leak in dissolved form because of brine displacement from the reservoir, which is caused by large-scale groundwater motion.
