Neutron embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels potentially limits the safe operational time of nuclear reactors. In tested RPV steel samples microcracks are known to originate from cleaved precipitates, inclusions or grain boundaries ...

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

During CO2 leakage, the Joule-Thomson effect and operational factors such as throttling and venting can cause the local temperature of the pipeline to drop abruptly to -78.5 ℃, significantly increasing the risk of brittle fracture.

Scattering mechanical performances for brittle bulk metallic glasses
Scattering mechanical performances of brittle La- and Mg-based BMGs are found in the present study. Upon dynamic loading, there exist largely scattered fracture strengths even if the strain rates are under the same order, and the BMG systems are the same.

As the shipbuilding industry has emerged from an extended recession, orders for high-value-added ships, such as LNG and ultra-large container ships, are increasing. For ultra-large container ships, high-strength, thick materials are applied.

Fracture of Brittle Metallic Glasses: Brittleness or Plasticity
We report a brittle Mg-based bulk metallic glass which approaches the ideal brittle behavior. However, a dimple structure is observed at the fracture surface by high resolution scanning electron microscopy, indicating some type of "ductile" fracture mechanism in this very brittle glass. We also show, from the available data, a clear correlation between

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Mixed mode I/II/III fracture assessment of PMMA using a new test fixture [PDF]
Brittle and quasi-brittle fracture has been recognized as the main failure mechanism in various structural components. Due to complexity of the components’ geometry and loading condition, a combination of tensile, in-plane shear and out of plane shear ...

A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...
