Sodium Sesquicarbonate Toxicity in Broiler Chickens

Avian Diseases, 1998
A case of feed misformulation resulted in the addition of sodium sesquicarbonate (SSC) into broiler chicken feed. SSC is a buffering agent used in the manufacture of high urea ruminant feeds that were also produced in this feed mill. Within 2 days of receipt of the tainted broiler feed on the farm, chickens were exhibiting polydypsia and wet droppings ...

Campylobacter jejuni Infection in Broiler Chickens

Avian Diseases, 2006

Spina bifida in broiler chicken embryos

Veterinary Record, 2007
CHICKEN embryo malformations have been reported by several authors (Fiser and others 1972, Sandhu and Brah 1982, Lash 1988, Saini and others 1993). The pathology of developmental abnormalities was reviewed by Riddell (1975). More recently, the prevalence of embryonic monstrosities and their impact on reproductive performance was evalu-ated (Butcher and

Pharmacokinetics of butorphanol in broiler chickens

Veterinary Record, 2011
Butorphanol tartrate (2 mg/kg) was injected intravenously in 18 healthy broiler chickens to study its pharmacokinetics. Plasma samples were analysed by a highly sensitive high‐performance liquid chromatography with diode‐array detection method and pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated from the mean pooled data.

‘Breast Blisters’ in the Broiler Chicken

Nature, 1962
BREAST blisters in table poultry have been recognized for some years1. They make the trussed bird unattractive and in consequence the producer receives a lower price for his product. The problem of breast blisters has now become a considerable one because of the recent great expansion of the broiler chicken industry.

Spondylolisthesis (‘Kinky Back’) in Broiler Chickens

Research in Veterinary Science, 1970
The incidence and pathological anatomy of a condition of the thoracic 5 to 7 region of the vertebral column of the fowl are described. The condition, known in the poultry industry as ‘Kinky back’, appears to be confined to broiler types of chickens and is defined as a spondylolisthesis at the thoracic 6 to 7 level.

Swollen-Head Syndrome in Broiler Chickens

Avian Diseases, 1984
Swollen-head syndrome is a disease seen in broiler chickens between 4 and 6 weeks of age in Southern Africa. It appears to be caused by a mixed coronavirus and Escherichia coli infection. The coronavirus appears to be of a hitherto unrecorded serotype. The disease is controlled by an attenuated live-virus vaccine and antibacterial medication.
