A randomized trial of nebulized 3% hypertonic saline with salbutamol in the treatment of acute bronchiolitis in hospitalized infants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
OBJECTIVE: Acute bronchiolitis is a common disorder of infants that often results in hospitalization. Apart from supportive care, no therapy has been shown to influence the course of the disease, except for a possible effect of nebulized hypertonic ...

Long Term Sequelae of Mild RSV Infections in Healthy Children Aged 0–3 Years in the Primary Care Setting—A Prospective Two Year Follow Up Observational Study

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 97, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Children with an early severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection have an increased risk of wheezing later in life. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate whether children with a mild RSV infection taken care of in a primary health care setting had an increased incidence of wheezing in the 2 years following infection compared to ...

Viral bronchiolitis and the detrimental effects of sleep

open access: yesDALHOUSIE MEDICAL JOURNAL, 2020
Infants recovering from bronchiolitis and no longer requiring supplemental oxygen will have brief episodes of oxygen desaturation during sleep when monitored with pulse oximetry. These episodes can be explained by the inhibition of the tonic activity of the inspiratory muscles during rapid eye movement sleep.

Bacterial small RNAs may mediate immune response differences seen in respiratory syncytial virus versus rhinovirus bronchiolitis

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
Bronchiolitis, a viral lower respiratory infection, is the leading cause of infant hospitalization, which is associated with an increased risk for developing asthma later in life.

Etiological diagnosis reduces the use of antibiotics in infants with bronchiolitis

open access: yesClinics, 2012
OBJECTIVE: Acute bronchiolitis is a leading cause of infant hospitalization and is most commonly caused by respiratory syncytial virus. Etiological tests are not required for its diagnosis, but the influence of viral screening on the therapeutic approach

Long Noncoding RNA Interleukin 6 Antisense RNA 1 Promotes Inflammatory Effects in Lung Macrophages via Exosomes Through the S100A9/TLR4 Pathway in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Progression

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 6, Issue 6, June 2025.
Clinical cohort analyses in COPD patients demonstrated lncRNA IL6‐AS1 overexpression inversely correlating with lung function. AAV‐mediated transgenic models and coculture system revealed fibroblast‐derived IL6‐AS1 stabilizes S100A9 through exosomal transfer to macrophages, promoting TLR4/AGER binding and NF‐κB‐driven inflammatory amplification ...

Predictors for the prescription of albuterol in infants hospitalized for viral bronchiolitis

open access: yesAllergologia et Immunopathologia, 2020
Despite the recommendation against routine use of inhaled bronchodilators in infants with viral bronchiolitis given in the main clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) on viral bronchiolitis, albuterol is widely prescribed to patients with this disease. The aim of this study was to identify predictors of prescription of albuterol in a population of infants
