Mechanical and Microstructural Effects of ZrO2 Nanoparticles in Fe20Cr Oxide Dispersion‐Strengthened Alloys Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
The influence of oxide nanoparticle synthesis route and concentration on microstructure and high‐temperature performance of additively manufactured oxide dispersion‐strengthened steels is investigated. Comparing laser‐generated and chemically synthesized ZrO2 nanoparticles, the study reveals how dispersion quality, crystal structure and particle size ...

Infection and transmission of Nosema bombi in Bombus terrestris colonies and its effect on hibernation, mating and colony founding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The impact of the microsporidium Nosema bombi on Bombus terrestris was studied by recording mating, hibernation success, protein titre in haemolymph, weight change during hibernation, and colony founding of queens that were inoculated with N.

A Simulative Approach for the Prediction of Mesoscale Residual Stress Fields in Solution‐Strengthened Ferritic Ductile Iron

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a 3D representative volume element‐based simulation approach to predict mesoscopic residual stress and strain fields in silicon solid solution‐strengthened ductile cast iron. By modeling phase transformation kinetics with an enhanced Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model, the effects of varying cooling rates on residual stresses are ...

Brood patch and sex-ratio observations indicate breeding provenance and timing in New Zealand storm petrel (Fregetta maoriana) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We used measurements of brood patch and moult status to estimate the breeding phenology of New Zealand Storm-Petrel, using birds caught at sea within the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park near Auckland, New Zealand.

Density-Dependent and -Independent Behaviors of the Adult Karner Blue (Lycaeides Melissa Samuelis) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
At 146 pine-oak barrens in central and northwestern Wisconsin USA during 1988-96, 3973 Karner blues (Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabokov) were found in 95.4 hr of transect surveys during spring and 6896 individuals in 134.8 hr during summer.

Process Parameter and Dimension‐Dependent Mn Vaporization During Laser Powder Bed Fusion of an Fe–Mi–Si–Cr‐Based Shape Memory Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The functional properties of Fe–Mn–Si–Cr‐based shape memory alloys are influenced, among other things, by their chemical composition. Here, the vaporization of Mn, the most volatile element of the alloy, is investigated. It is shown that the process parameters make noninterchangeable contributions to the vaporization and that vaporization differences ...

A game-theoretic model of interspecific brood parasitism with sequential decisions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The interaction between hosts and parasites in bird populations has been studied extensively. This paper uses game-theoretic methods to model this interaction.

Antimicrobial Titanium–Copper Alloys: The Role of Microstructure in Arc‐Melted Compositions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Copper‐containing titanium alloys show promise in combating orthopedic implant infections. This study explores the influence of heat treatment on Ti‐11.5Cu and Ti‐33Cu alloys, revealing that larger Ti2Cu precipitates (≈5 μm) enhance antimicrobial efficacy through increased surface contact. Results suggest contact sterilization is the primary mechanism,

The influence of partial substitutes of protein feed of bees on the production of drone larvae homogenate

open access: yesНауковий вісник Львівського національного університету ветеринарної медицини та біотехнологій імені С.З. Гжицького. Серія: Сільськогосподарські науки, 2020
The biological value of the bee drone brood homogenate is showed. In recent times, the bee drone brood homogenate has become widely used among the population. In particular, the nutritional value the drone brood homogenate is determined by a high content

Residual Stress States in Microstructurally Graded PBF–LB/M Austenitic Steel Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines microstructurally graded 316L rectangular tube profiles fabricated via PBF–LB/M using a dual‐laser system. A 1 kW top‐hat and a 400 W Gaussian laser create distinct grain sizes and crystallographic texture. Mechanical properties are linked to microstructural evolution driven by processing conditions.
