Smeđi medvjed (Ursus arctos) krupna je i snažna životinja, prosječne mase odraslih jedinki 100 - 150 kg, a ponekad mužjaci dosegnu preko 200 kg (rijetko i do 300 kg). Tijelo im je prekriveno dugom dlakom i gustom poddlakom. Osnovna boja dlake je smeđa, s varijacijama od žutosmeđe do crne.

Kontrola reprodukcije smeđih medvjeda (Ursus arctos) držanih u zatočeništvu se provodi prvenstveno zbog ograničenih kapaciteta nastambi i zbog dobrobiti životinja. Pri tome se kao optimalna kirurška metoda najčešće provodi kastracija mužjaka, dok ovariektomija ženki do sada nije opisana u literaturi.
