Stabilization of mandibular symphysis separation in an Amazonian brown brocket deer ( Mazama nemorivaga )

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, 2022
Abstract A 2‐year‐old, 22.5 kg, entire, male Amazonian brown brocket buck ( Mazama nemorivaga ) was presented with difficulty in prehending food, ptyalism, inability to close the mouth and lateral deviation of the tongue. Physical examination revealed poor rostral mandibular

Protein profile of the ovarian follicular fluid of brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira; Fisher, 1814)

open access: yesZygote, 2019
SummaryThe aim of this study was to characterize the protein profile of ovarian follicular fluid (FF) of brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira). Five adult females received an ovarian stimulation treatment and the FF was collected by laparoscopy from small/medium (≤3.5 mm) and large (>3.5 mm) follicles.

Habitat use patterns suggest that climate‐driven vegetation changes will negatively impact mammal communities in the Amazon

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 26, Issue 5, Page 663-674, October 2023., 2023
The southern border of the Amazon is threatened by climate and land use induced shifts from rainforest to savannah‐like habitat. We show that most terrestrial medium or large mammals in protected areas in the southern Brazilian Amazon react negatively in their space use to natural savannah habitat, including species considered habitat generalists. This

Neo‐tropical felid activity patterns in relation to potential prey and intraguild competitors in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, Mexico

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 5, Page 969-977, September 2023., 2023
There is little temporal segregation between the nocturnal activities of jaguars, pumas, and ocelots in Mexico's Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, although pumas were more active closer to dawn. Jaguars had low activity overlap with species likely to be common prey, whereas ocelots had high overlap with their potential prey.

Drivers of large carnivore density in non‐hunted, multi‐use landscapes

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Protected areas serve as population strongholds for many large carnivores, with multi‐use landscapes along their borders forming the front‐lines of wildlife conservation. Understanding large carnivore population dynamics within working landscapes is difficult where anthropogenic mortality is high and unregulated.

Various branching patterns of the aortic arch in the Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus, Pallas, 1771) on Jeju Island [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This study examined and compared the branching pattern of the aortic arch (AA) and its major branches in the Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) on Jeju Island (Jeju roe deer [JRD]) with those in the roe deer of the Korean peninsula (mainland roe deer

Identification and Determination of the Seminiferous Epithelium Stages and Spermatid Development in the Testis of Aceh Bull (Bos indicus)

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine International, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
This study was conducted to describe the stages of seminiferous epithelium (SE), determine the relative frequency of the stages, and identify the steps of spermatid development during spermatogenesis in the testicular tissue of Aceh bull. Seven pairs of the testicular organs of Aceh bull (Bos indicus) were used and then processed in a histological ...

A gene-tree test of the traditional taxonomy of American deer: the importance of voucher specimens, geographic data, and dense sampling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The taxonomy of American deer has been established almost entirely on the basis of morphological data and without the use of explicit phylogenetic methods; hence, phylogenetic analyses including data for all of the currently recognized species, even if ...

Roadkill patterns in Latin American birds and mammals

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 31, Issue 9, Page 1756-1783, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Roads are a major threat for wildlife, degrading habitat and causing mortality via wildlife–vehicle collisions. In Latin America, the conjunction of high biodiversity and a rapidly expanding road network is reason for concern. We introduce an approach that combines species traits and habitat preferences to describe vulnerability and map ...

Coxiella burnetii in Ticks, Argentina [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The Gammaproteobacterium Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of acute Q fever and chronic endocarditis in humans worldwide. It is transmitted primarily by aerosol route or by ingestion of fomites from infected animals, mostly from domestic ruminants.
