Changes in the fatty acid composition of brown shrimp, Crangon crangon, after boiling

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, 2022
Brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (L.), is the most valuable target of coastal fisheries in the southern North Sea. Annual landings exceeded 30,000 tons in the last decade, yielding up to 100 Mio Euro.

Microbial communities and functional diversity in seafood

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Functional diversity encompasses ecosystem processes that enhance adaptability to environmental change. This study explores the diversity of microorganisms associated with seafood. In this paper, we present our knowledge of microbial diversity in relation to seafood.

Sodium sulfite can reliably induce chemical hypoxia without toxic effects in the model sea anemone species, Exaiptasia diaphana

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Climate change is accelerating the deoxygenation of aquatic ecosystems, so understanding its effects on biological processes is increasingly critical. An emerging method for inducing hypoxia during experimentation utilizes sodium sulfite (SSI) to scavenge oxygen; however, it remains unclear if hypoxia‐inducing concentrations of SSI are toxic ...

Occurrence of Penaeus aztecus, Ives, 1891 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Penaeidae) in the coastal water of Alexandria, Egypt

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Aquatic Research, 2020
A sample of 347 specimens of the northern brown shrimp Penaeus aztecus, a western Atlantic species, was collected from July 2019 to June 2020 by local bottom trawlers off two fishing areas, Abu-Qir Bay and Ma’deya, east of Alexandria Coast, Egypt.

Differential Transcriptome Analysis of Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma Under Different RUNX3 Expression Patterns

open access: yesMedicine Advances, EarlyView.
RUNX3 status in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) is associated with subtle gene‐level differences but reveals exploratory pathway‐level patterns, including epithelial differentiation, extracellular matrix remodeling, and hypoxia‐related programs. These findings generate testable hypotheses for RUNX3's biological role in LUSC.

Warming modifies trophic impacts of invading shrimp with impact varying among primary producers

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Environmental change drivers, such as climate change and species invasions, can disrupt biological networks and weaken ecosystem stability. Acting together, these drivers may interact and alter the effects on the ecosystem. However, few studies have examined the interactive effects of climate change and species invasions, particularly in aquatic ...

Effects of Density and Food Availability on the Growth of Captive‐Reared Eastern Hellbenders

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
Our experiments demonstrate that food is the major factor limiting captive‐reared Hellbender growth and that increasing rearing density to the tested levels does not negatively impact growth. Implementing these changes may result in larger, more robust Hellbenders and increase the success of reintroduction programs.

Enhancement of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in juvenile brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes, 1900), fed β-1.3 glucan vitamin E, and β-carotene and infected with white spot syndrome virus

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2011
The effect of dietary β-Ο-glucan, vitamin E, and β-carotene supplements in juvenile brown shrimp, Farfantepenaeus californiensis, inoculated with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) was evaluated. Groups of 30 organisms (weighing 1 ± 0.5 g) were cultured in

Limited capacity for rapid acclimation to marine heatwaves in coastal invertebrates

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Across 10 coastal invertebrate species, we provide a rare multi‐species test of rapid acclimation to realistic marine heatwaves. Responses are consistently weak, revealing that short‐term plasticity cannot keep pace with warming and may lead to underestimated vulnerability in coastal ecosystems. Abstract Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and

Sensitivity of multispecies maximum sustainable yields to trends in the top (marine mammals) and bottom (primary production) compartments of the southern North Sea food-web.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
In marine ecosystems, maximum sustainable yield considerations are affected by any substantial changes that occur in the top and bottom compartments of the food-web.
