An HWE‐Family Histidine Kinase Modulates Brucella Cell Envelope Properties and Host Innate Immune Response

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 124, Issue 3, Page 245-258, September 2025.
The HWE‐family histidine kinase PhyK regulates the cell envelope structure of the intracellular pathogen Brucella ovis and affects how the host immune system responds to this bacterium. Deletion of phyK alters bacterial survival in the face of detergent stress and reduces immune activation in infected macrophages.

The Role of Foxes in Transmitting Zoonotic Bacteria to Humans: A Scoping Review

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, Volume 72, Issue 6, Page 485-500, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Zoonotic diseases inflict substantial burdens on human and animal populations worldwide, and many of these infections are bacterial. An Australian study investigating environmental risk factors for Buruli ulcer in humans detected the causative agent, Mycobacterium ulcerans , in the faeces of wild foxes, a novel finding that suggests foxes may ...

Soft Nanocarriers as Antimicrobial Co‐Delivery Systems to Combat Resistant Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 21, August 19, 2025.
Soft nanocarrier‐based co‐delivery systems present a versatile and promising platform for combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by enabling spatiotemporally controlled, pathogen‐specific drug release. Their tunable physicochemical properties allow for the co‐encapsulation of synergistic antimicrobial agents, optimization of drug ratios, and surface ...

Understanding European Consumers' Perception of Food Safety Risks: A Multicountry Analysis of Raw Milk and Raw Milk‐Based Cheeses

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 6, June 2025.
Food risk perception involves an individual's assessment of the presence of safety attributes in food. The survey utilized a structured questionnaire administered via the computer‐assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method. The results provide valuable insights to inform risk communication strategies to be adopted by risk managers.

By‐Catch of Grey Seals in Fish Traps in the German Baltic Sea—From Incidents to Mitigation and Fisheries Regulation

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT In autumn 2017, an unusual mortality event of Baltic grey seals (Halichoerus grypus grypus) occurred at the German Baltic coast. An alarming 23 carcasses of healthy, well‐fed, male large grey seals were found in a confined area in the Greifswald Bay (Mecklenburg‐Western Pomerania) in < 10 weeks from September to December.

Bichat guidelines for the clinical management of brucellosis and bioterrorism-related brucellosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Interest in Brucella species as a biological weapon stems from the fact that airborne transmission of the agent is possible. It is highly contagious and enters through mucous membranes such as the conjunctiva, oropharynx, respiratory tract and skin ...

Real-time detection of Brucella abortus, Brucella melitensis and Brucella suis

open access: yesMolecular and Cellular Probes, 2001
Real-time PCR-based assays specific for Brucella abortus, Brucella melitensis and Brucella suis were developed. The assays utilize an upstream primer that is derived from 3' end of the genetic element IS 711, whereas the downstream primers and probes are designed from signature sequences specific to a species or a biovar.
