Brushite Boron Cement with Antibacterial Properties

Inorganic Materials: Applied Research
Boron-containing brushite cements (B-BC) for bone grafting based on B-substituted β-tricalcium phosphate (B-TCP) have been developed. The phase composition and microstructure of B-BC have been studied. It is shown that the crystalline phase of brushite is formed as a result of hardening of cements.

Studies of apatite mineral formation are complicated by the possibility of forming several calcium phosphate phases. The least soluble, hydroxyapatite (HAP), is preferentially formed under neutral or basic conditions. In more acidic solutions phases such as dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (Brushite, DCPD) and octacalcium phosphate (OCP) are often found.

The majority of human kidney stones are composed of multiple calcium oxalate crystals with variable amounts of brushite [dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD)] and hydroxyapatite (HAP) as a nucleus, in which fluid-mediated dissolution and reprecipitation may result in the phase transformation of DCPD to HAP.

Defluoridation of Drinking Water by Boiling with Brushite and Calcite

Existing methods for defluoridating drinking water involve expensive high technology or are slow, inefficient and/or unhygienic. A new method is now suggested, encompassing brushite and calcite suspension followed by boiling. Our aim was to examine the efficiency of the method and the chemical reactions involved.

Large Brushite Stone in a Dilated Prostatic Urethra

We report a rare case of a large brushite stone lodged in a dilated prostatic urethra. The patient had been asymptomatic except for an episode of hematuria and he underwent successful removal of the stone. The stone weighed 35 gm., had a concentric layered structure and was composed mainly of brushite.
