Using pre-screening methods for an effective and reliable site characterization at megasites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper illustrates the usefulness of pre-screening methods for an effective characterization of polluted sites. We applied a sequence of site characterization methods to a former Soviet military airbase with likely fuel and benzene, toluene ...

Production and Formulation of Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2 Cell Powders for Marine Oil Spill Bioremediation

open access: yesBiotechnology and Applied Biochemistry, Volume 73, Issue 1, Page 123-137, February 2026.
Abstract Oil spills pose severe threats to marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2, a marine bacterium with superior hydrocarbon‐degrading capabilities, emerges as a promising agent for bioremediation. This study identified an economical growth substrate for A.

Advanced treatment of wastewater with BTEX

open access: yesDesalination and Water Treatment, 2012
Abstract Standards for concentrations of pollutants in wastewaters discharged to the environment are especially restrictive for BTEX, the compounds which are recognized to be particularly toxic. There is a need to lower the BTEX concentration in the stream coming out of the bioreactor. For this purpose, a high-pressure membrane process was proposed.

Recent advances in fluorescent materials innovation and film‐based sensing application

open access: yesResponsive Materials, Volume 4, Issue 1, February 2026.
This review systematically summarizes recent advances in high‐performance film‐based fluorescent sensors (FFSs), specifically covering the innovative strategies for engineering porous sensing films, and the sensitive and rapid detection for diverse target analytes. Current challenges for the further development of the sensors are discussed, guiding the

Pan‐Genomic and Phenotypic Characterisation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Degradation by Pseudomonas Species

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 1, February 2026.
Pseudomonas is one of the most significant bacterial genus involved in the petroleum hydrocarbon bioremediation. Innovatively, through pan‐genomic analysis at the genus level, we found that different Pseudomonas strains have excellent complementarity at the nodes of the degradation pathway of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Study of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs( in the exhaust air from low heat sterilizer devices of four hospitals in Tehran

open access: yesSalāmat-i kār-i Īrān, 2014
Background and aims: Application of low heat devices was increased for infectious waste sterilizing in many hospitals in Iran. Studies have shown that the generation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous materials is most probable in the ...

Determination of oil and grease, total petroleum hydrocarbons and volatile aromatic compounds in soil and sediment samples

open access: yesJournal of Environmental Engineering and Landscape Management, 2010
This paper describes a case study of petroleum‐contaminated soil/sediment samples which were analyzed using gas chromatography‐flame ionization detector (GC‐FID) for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), volatile aromatic com‐pounds: benzene, toluene ...

Evaluation of the pollution pressures posed by groups of chemicals on British riverine invertebrate populations

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 1, Page 106-127, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Globally, rivers receive a diverse range of chemicals, including metals, pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, petrochemicals, human and veterinary pharmaceuticals and personal care products. However, the extent to which these different chemical groups affect riverine invertebrate communities is not well defined.

Assessment of the impact of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) on soil microbial population in selected areas of Port Harcourt City, Nigeria

open access: yesScientific African
Human activities are on the rise in these areas and consequently, the discharge of BTEX to the environment is on the rise. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), are known to cause cancer and mutagenesis.
