Circulation in bubble columns

AIChE Journal, 1997
AbstractLiquid circulation in bubble columns influences many system properties such as mass transfer and catalyst dispersion. Conditions favorable for liquid circulation often exist only for highly turbulent slurries. Experiments under conditions of lowered surface tension proved conclusively that uniform circulation can exist even in the bubbly‐flow ...

Bubble Column Reactors

2019
This chapter introduces some fundamental bubble dynamics in liquid media. Understanding bubble dynamics is critical for bubble column design since the hydrodynamic behaviors are induced and dictated by the gas phase in the form of bubbles. Complex hydrodynamic behavior in bubble columns is closely related to the characteristics of rising bubbles and ...

Hydrodynamics in bubble columns

Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification, 1989
Abstract A heterogeneous fluid dynamic model has been developed to describe the complex flow structure of two-phase flow in bubble columns. The equation of continuity and the momentum balances are the basis of the model. The coupling of the two phases is performed by a force of interaction which is deduced by a force balance around a single rising ...

Bubble column bioreactors

2006
The photographic and electrical conductivity methods to measure the structure of two phase flow, especially bubble size, bubble frequency, local gas hold-up and, for the latter, the bubble velocity are described.

The Latest Frontiers of Bubble Columns and Slurry Bubble Columns. Effect of Oil Dispersion on Flow Characteristics in Bubble Column.

KAGAKU KOGAKU RONBUNSHU, 2001

Bubble properties and pressure fluctuations in bubble columns

Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1994
The effects of gas (0.02-0.1 m/s) and liquid velocities (0.0-0.10 m/s) on the bubble properties and pressure fluctuations have been determined in a 0.376 m-IDx 2.1 m-high bubble column. The pressure fluctuations have been analyzed by resorting to the Fractal analysis; the time series of pressure fluctuation signals have been analyzed by means of the ...

A bubble-induced turbulence model for gas-liquid bubbly flows in airlift columns, pipes and bubble columns

Chemical Engineering Science, 2020
Abstract The presence of bubbles dramatically changes the liquid turbulence in bubbly flows. Modifications to liquid turbulent transport equations by adding source terms representing the effect of bubble-induced turbulence (BIT) are usually made to promote the reliability of Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations. However, existing closures for BIT

Bubble dynamics investigation in a slurry bubble column

AIChE Journal, 2008
AbstractThe application of four‐point optical probe has been for the first time extended to a slurry system in a 10.2‐cm ID column. Bubble dynamics (local gas holdup, bubble chord length, bubble velocity, bubble frequency, and specific interfacial area) were investigated using an air–water‐catalyst system under atmospheric pressure. With an increase in

Bubble Column Bioreactors

2000
From the various types of bioreactors discussed in the literature, only a few are actually used in industry. By far the majority of processes are performed in stirred tank bioreactors. Besides these standard reactors, only bubble columns or, more generally, airlift reactors reached a noticeable number of applications.

Dynamic simulation of bubbly flow in bubble columns

Chemical Engineering Science, 1999
Gas–liquid bubbly flow in two-dimensional bubble columns is studied by numerical simulation. An Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model is used to describe the time-dependent motion of the liquid driven by small, spherical gas bubbles injected at the bottom of the columns.
