Dynamic shell buckling behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes embedded in an elastic medium

open access: yes, 2013
This paper studies the dynamic shell buckling behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) embedded in an elastic medium under step axial load based on continuum mechanics model. It is shown that, for occurrence of dynamic shell buckling of MWNTs or

A Soft Robotic Fish With a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Body and Negative Stiffness Spine

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a bio‐mimetic soft robotic fish driven by fiber‐reinforced dielectric elastomer actuators integrated as its body. By prestretching this active skin against a flexible spine, a negative stiffness system is created, enabling large‐amplitude bending.

Local buckling of profiled skin sheets resting on tensionless elastic foundation under in-plane shear loading

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper, the local buckling behaviour of profiled skin sheets resting on tensionless elastic Winkler foundation under in-plane shear loadings is studied.

Mode jumping in the lateral buckling of subsea pipelines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Unburied subsea pipelines under high-temperature conditions tend to relieve their axial compressive stress by forming localised lateral buckles. This phenomenon is traditionally studied under the assumption of a specific lateral deflection profile (mode)

3D‐Printing Aided Rapid Prototyping of Pretensioned Tensegrity Structures for Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Printing, injection molding, and assembly (PMA) is a method for rapid prototyping mesoscale, topologically complex, and tensioned tensegrity structures. In combination with PMA method, two mold design strategies: modular mold and compact channel layout, enable efficiency and scalability for tensegrity fabrication.

Miniaturized Magnetic Tip Design for Endoluminal Vine Robot Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A magnetic tip mount is designed for a miniaturized 7 mm soft‐growing vine robot to enable wireless magnetic steering and onboard imaging, while preserving a 3 mm working channel. The internal–external ring magnets design balances magnetic attachment with low eversion pressure. Experiments demonstrate ±90° steering, 34 mm bending radius, and successful

Plastic buckling of initially imperfect stiffened cylinders in axial compression

open access: yes, 1981
Bibliography: leaves 117-118.Bifurcation in the plastic range of axially compressed stringer-stiffened cylinders is investigated. The shell under consideration is assumed to have an initial imperfection in the form of a sinusoidal deviation both axially ...

Intelligent Sky Guardians (InSkyGuard): An Aerial Robotic Swarm for Autonomous Detection and Entrapment of Rogue Multirotors

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Intelligent Sky Guardians (InSkyGuard) is introduced as a four‐drone swarm that autonomously detects, tracks, and safely captures rogue drones using a coordinated net system. Computer vision and leader–follower control architecture enable synchronized enclosure, while integrated failsafes enhance system reliability. Validated through closed‐environment

Mode-Reduction Applied to Initial Post-Buckling Behavior

open access: yes, 1994
This paper presents a perturbation approach for analyzing the (initial) post-buckling behavior of elastic structures. In this perturbation a small number of buckling modes is taken into account. This approach results in a potential energy function which is defined in terms of amplitudes of the selected modes.

Buckling experiments on hollow flange beams with web stiffeners

open access: yes, 1996
A new cold-formed and resistance welded section known as the Hollow Flange Beam (HFB) has been developed recently in Australia. In contrast to the common lateral torsional buckling mode of I-beams, this unique section comprising two stiff triangular ...
