Coupled modes of elastic buckling
Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1967Abstract I t is shown that when the critical loads corresponding to the modes of buckling of a two-degrees-of-freedom system are equal, or nearly so, then elastic post-buckling involves coupling between the modes. The forms taken by these coupled modes are discussed for the general case and for special cases of symmetry; the forms are illustrated by

New Insight into Interaction of Buckling Modes with Stable Post-buckling Response
Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, 2014Buckling mode interaction of elastic systems in the presence of initial imperfections is well known to have a detrimental effect on the response of a wide range of structural systems. This has been demonstrated mostly analytically for simple models, assuming small displacements, thus obtaining results with questionable validity in the post-buckling ...

A modified method is proposed for the consistent imperfection method, which introduces the shape of the first-order linear buckling mode of a spatial structure as the imperfection pattern to estimate the non-linear buckling load of an imperfect structure.

Oscillatory Buckling Mode in Thin-Film Nucleation
Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2006We are interested in switching of elongated thin-film elements as described by the micromagnetic model. Nucleation occurs when the saturation branch becomes unstable at a critical field. It is characterized by a degeneracy of the Hessian of the micromagnetic energy. The degenerate subspace describes the unstable mode.

This paper presents the structural behavior of doubly-symmetric built-up cold-formed steel (CFS) columns that fail in local-global (flexural-torsional) interactive buckling modes. The built-up column investigated in this study is formed (back-to-back) by

Buckling Mode Interaction in Composite Plate Assemblies
Applied Mechanics Reviews, 1995The analysis of buckling mode interaction of fiber-reinforced composite columns, modeled as plate assemblies, is presented. The main assumptions are linear elasticity; a linear fundamental equilibrium path; the existence of critical states that are coincident or near coincident; and a coupled path rising from a quadratic combination of modal ...

This study presents novel accurate nonlinear buckling solutions of ring-stiffened cylindrical shells. A theoretical model based on the discrete stiffener theory for nonlinear buckling is first developed, which can account for multiple buckling modes, including overall buckling, local buckling, coupled buckling, and tripping.
