Oscillatory Buckling Mode in Thin-Film Nucleation

Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2006
We are interested in switching of elongated thin-film elements as described by the micromagnetic model. Nucleation occurs when the saturation branch becomes unstable at a critical field. It is characterized by a degeneracy of the Hessian of the micromagnetic energy. The degenerate subspace describes the unstable mode.

A multiplicity of localized buckling modes for twisted rod equations

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 1996
An infinitely long straight prismatic rod is subjected to a twisting moment and axial tension. Torsional buckling under homoclinic boundary conditions is analysed; for computational feasibility, however, a finite length has to be used. Three cases are considered: (i) circular cross-section with linear material law, (ii) circular cross section with ...

On modes of buckling for a plate on an elastic foundation

Mechanics of Solids, 2010
We study flexural stability of a homogeneous plate compressed in its plane and lying on an elastic foundation. There is an elastic stratum between the plate and the foundation. In the case of homogeneous uniform compression, the linear approximation does not answer the question of the shape of buckling.

Localization of buckling modes in plates and laminates

Composite Structures, 2015
Abstract We use the Mindlin plate theory and the finite element method to delineate the effect of fixing points on a transverse normal to the mid-surface of the plate on the localization of buckling modes in clamped–clamped rectangular plates made of linear elastic, homogeneous and either isotropic (monolithic) or orthotropic (fiber-reinforced ...

Higher Mode Buckling of Bimetallic Beam

Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1971
An analysis is made of the thermal buckling and snap-through action of an initially curved bimetallic beam, supported by two hinges at the extremities. A beam theory solution is obtained for the bimetallic element, which shows that the deflection and snap-through response of the bimetallic beam, to increasing temperature, is considerably different from

Buckling analysis of stepped plates using modified buckling mode shapes

Thin-Walled Structures, 2008
A new approximate procedure for buckling analysis of simply supported rectangular stepped or perforated plates subjected to uniform edge stresses is formulated. The procedure uses energy method based on modified buckling mode shapes. The change of thickness within a plate is characterized by introducing a stepping index.

Coupled modes of elastic buckling

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1967
Abstract I t is shown that when the critical loads corresponding to the modes of buckling of a two-degrees-of-freedom system are equal, or nearly so, then elastic post-buckling involves coupling between the modes. The forms taken by these coupled modes are discussed for the general case and for special cases of symmetry; the forms are illustrated by
