Nonsinusoidal Buckling Modes of Sandwich Plates
Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1954Both wrinkling and "quasi-Euler" buckling modes of sandwich plates have hitherto been taken as sinusoidal. In this report the possibility of nonsinusoidal modes is investigated. The core slab material considered is the special orthotropic one which does not resist deformation in its own plane, but only extension and shear ing perpendicular to its ...

Buckling analysis of stepped plates using modified buckling mode shapes
Thin-Walled Structures, 2008A new approximate procedure for buckling analysis of simply supported rectangular stepped or perforated plates subjected to uniform edge stresses is formulated. The procedure uses energy method based on modified buckling mode shapes. The change of thickness within a plate is characterized by introducing a stepping index.

High‐mode buckling responses of buckling‐restrained brace core plates
Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2013SUMMARYCyclic loading tests and finite element analyses on six novel all‐steel buckling‐restrained braces (BRBs) are conducted using different loading patterns to investigate the core plate high‐mode buckling phenomenon. The proposed BRB is composed of a core member and a pair of identical restraining members, which restrains the core member by using ...

Post-Buckling Behavior under Mode Interaction
Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1979The post-buckling behavior of continuous elastic systems under interaction of two symmetric stable or unstable modes, is considered. For the cases of two stable (unstable) modes with a negative (positive) interaction coefficient, it is shown that mode interaction increases imperfection sensitivity whenever a 2 times 2 energy matrix of the perfect ...

Higher Mode Buckling of Bimetallic Beam
Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1971An analysis is made of the thermal buckling and snap-through action of an initially curved bimetallic beam, supported by two hinges at the extremities. A beam theory solution is obtained for the bimetallic element, which shows that the deflection and snap-through response of the bimetallic beam, to increasing temperature, is considerably different from

Two Distinct Buckling Modes in Carbon Nanotube Bending
Nano Letters, 2006By using controlled SPM manipulation, carbon nanotubes have been continuously bent into a series of increasing angles, and two distinct buckling modes corresponding to "abrupt" and "gradual" buckle formation were observed through recording the height increment at the bend site during the loading process. Molecular dynamics simulation also found the two

Buckling Analysis of Tapered Continuous Columns by Using Modified Buckling Mode Shapes
Journal of Marine Science and Application, 2019Elastic critical buckling load of a column depends on various parameters, such as boundary conditions, material, and cross-section geometry. The main purpose of this work is to present a new method for investigating the buckling load of tapered columns subjected to axial force.

Coupled modes of elastic buckling
Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1967Abstract I t is shown that when the critical loads corresponding to the modes of buckling of a two-degrees-of-freedom system are equal, or nearly so, then elastic post-buckling involves coupling between the modes. The forms taken by these coupled modes are discussed for the general case and for special cases of symmetry; the forms are illustrated by

New Insight into Interaction of Buckling Modes with Stable Post-buckling Response
Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, 2014Buckling mode interaction of elastic systems in the presence of initial imperfections is well known to have a detrimental effect on the response of a wide range of structural systems. This has been demonstrated mostly analytically for simple models, assuming small displacements, thus obtaining results with questionable validity in the post-buckling ...
