Multi-decadal validation of the Budyko framework in mainland China: A watershed-climate-geographic zoning approach

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: Mainland China, covering diverse hydroclimatic and physiographic regions, during 1980–2022. Study focus: This study evaluated the applicability of the Budyko-Fu framework across mainland China using three regionalization schemes: watershed ...

Seasonal to Decadal Patterns in Sea Ice and Turbidity at Arctic River Mouths

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Rapid warming of the Arctic is accelerating riverine delivery of freshwater, heat, and sediment to the Arctic Ocean. River mouth zones are especially vulnerable to this change, as these dynamic land–ocean interfaces are hotspots of primary productivity.

Budyko Curve Conformance Unravelling Hydrological Change in a Semi‐Arid Mediterranean‐Climate River Basin

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 9, September 2026.
This study applies an integration of Budyko diagnostics, change‐point detection, and dual attribution methods to the Gediz River Basin, revealing a major 1984 regime shift. Streamflow decline is driven mainly (50%–75%) by reduced precipitation, with secondary human impacts.

Changing Water Resources in the Indus Basin: A Multi‐Model Budyko‐Based Analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, Volume 46, Issue 11, September 2026.
Budyko‐based analysis evaluates historical (1962–2005) and future hydroclimatic change across the Indus River Basin. Budyko shifts indicate rising atmospheric evaporative demand and increasing energy limitation under future scenarios. ABSTRACT Assessing hydroclimatic variability and future water availability is crucial for sustainable water‐resource ...

ESTIMATTON OF BUDYKO´ ADIMENSIONAL RELATTON IN COLOMBIA

open access: yes, 2007
Los balances de agua y energía en cuencas hidrográficas condicionan la formación del terreno, la distribución y productividad de la vegetación. Se define el número adimensional de Budyko, B, como la relación entre la precipitación media anual (P) y la ...

From Past to Future: Overall Patterns, Nonlinear Relationships, Spatial Heterogeneity and Drivers of Ecosystem Service Trade‐Offs and Synergies in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 37, Issue 15, Page 11322-11345, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Land‐use change and climate change are reshaping watershed ecological functions and may intensify the risk of localized ecological degradation. However, existing studies have primarily focused on the spatiotemporal patterns of ecosystem services (ESs) during historical periods, while the nonlinear changes, spatial heterogeneity, and driving ...

Attribution Analysis of Runoff Variation in Kuye River Basin Based on Three Budyko Methods

open access: yesLand, 2021
The Loess Plateau is the main soil erosion area within the Yellow River Basin. Quantifying the contribution rate of climate change and human activities to runoff change can provide support for water resources management in the Yellow River Basin.

Enhanced Dry Season Moisture Recycling in the Congo and Amazon Rainforests

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract The rainforests of South America and Africa are considerably reliant on rainfall supplied by evaporation from the rainforests themselves through moisture recycling. Thus, rainforest loss in these areas can reduce evaporation as well as subsequent rainfall in the wider forested region.

Technical note: Do different projections matter for the Budyko framework?

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2022
Abstract. The widely used Budyko framework defines the water and energy limits of catchments. Generally, catchments plot close to these physical limits, and Budyko (1974) developed a curve that predicted the positions of catchments in this framework. Often, the independent variable is defined as an aridity index, which is used to predict the ratio of ...
