Nonsmooth frameworks for an extended Budyko model
In latitude-dependent energy balance models, ice-free and ice-covered conditions form physical boundaries of the system. With carbon dioxide treated as a bifurcation parameter, the resulting bifurcation diagram is nonsmooth with curves of equilibria and boundaries forming corners at points of intersection.

Land Surface Feedbacks Regulate Atmospheric Water Demand and Maintain Global Drying Stability
Abstract Atmospheric aridity is widely projected to intensify under climate warming, driven by rapidly increasing atmospheric water demand, as reflected in potential evaporation (PE). Yet global trends in precipitation, runoff, and vegetation productivity reveal a contrasting pattern of enhanced water fluxes and widespread greening, known as the ...

Quantification of long-term partitioning of precipitation into evaporation and runoff is a fundamental pursuit in catchment hydrology. The Budyko framework provides a theoretical basis for this and estimates the evaporative fraction based on the aridity ...

Improving annual streamflow estimates using Budyko parameterization driven by catchment attributes
The Budyko framework is widely used to infer long-term water-energy partitioning. Its original uniform parameters limited accuracy, while locally calibrated formulations are difficult to apply in ungauged basins.

Abstract Diagnosing monthly evapotranspiration (ET) under water‐balance constraints is essential for understanding land‐atmosphere interactions and managing water resources under changing climate conditions. Since 2002, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its successor GRACE Follow‐On (GRACE/‐FO) missions have provided precise ...

Budyko-based past and future disaggregation of climate and catchment effects on streamflow changes
Budyko-based approaches are widely used to separate climate and catchment effects on streamflow changes. Considering the potential changes in streamflow, such separation is essential for future water resources management.

Abstract Weather and climate models rely on parameterizations to represent unresolved sub‐grid processes. Traditional schemes rely on fixed coefficients that are weakly constrained and tuned offline, contributing to persistent biases that limit their ability to adapt to underlying physics.

Using the Budyko Curve for Water Budget Calculation in Long-term Basin Planning Studies [PDF]

Diagnosis and Treatment of the SWAT Hydrological Response Using the Budyko Framework
The hydrologic response of a river basin pertains to how precipitation is partitioned into streamflow, evapotranspiration, and infiltration. The reliability of all these components is essential for the sustainable use of water resources. This paper seeks

Abstract Understanding how surface energy partitioning varies with soil water content (SWC) is crucial to land–atmosphere (LA) coupling. This study evaluates monthly variations in SWC and surface energy budget components across CONUS using in situ observations (OBS) and model‐derived products, including reanalyses (MERRA2 and ERA5) and two CESM ...
