Buffelgrass invasion and glyphosate effects on desert soil microbiome communities

open access: yes, 2020
Buffelgrass (Cenchus ciliaris) is a drought-tolerant invasive grass in the Americas and Australia that significantly impacts native plant communities and ecosystems.

Impact of Nigrospora oryzae-Derived Natural Products on Photosynthesis and Oxidative Stress in Eichhornia crassipes. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiol Plant
Abstract Interest in natural herbicides has been growing due to government policies restricting synthetic herbicide use in many countries. In that regard, this study investigates the potential of Nigrospora oryzae extract as a natural herbicide against the aquatic invasive weed Eichhornia crassipes.

Forecasting an invasive species’ distribution with global distribution data, local data, and physiological information

open access: yesEcosphere, 2018
Understanding invasive species distributions and potential invasions often requires broad‐scale information on the environmental tolerances of the species. Further, resource managers are often faced with knowing these broad‐scale relationships as well as

Mass mortality of saguaros (Carnegiea gigantea) from windthrow: A rare, demographic disturbance in a desert ecosystem

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Windthrow is a significant disturbance in many forests globally during which strong winds damage trees or other large flora, yet its role in arid ecosystems remains largely understudied. The saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea), a keystone species of the Sonoran Desert, is a long‐lived, massive succulent whose demography is primarily thought to

Population dynamics, survival, and movements of Texas tortoises in a national park in southern Texas

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 4, May 2026.
Texas tortoise abundance in a small national park in South Texas, USA, declined by >25%, from an estimated 273 tortoises in 2014 to 204 tortoises in 2024. The severity of the decline varied across survey units, but abundance remained highest in areas having greater canopy cover and experiencing less invasion by Guinea grass.

In Silico and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization Mapping Reveals Collinearity between the Pennisetum squamulatum Apomixis Carrier-Chromosome and Chromosome 2 of Sorghum and Foxtail Millet. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Apomixis, or clonal propagation through seed, is a trait identified within multiple species of the grass family (Poaceae). The genetic locus controlling apomixis in Pennisetum squamulatum (syn Cenchrus squamulatus) and Cenchrus ciliaris (syn Pennisetum ...

Forage Biomass and Chemical Composition of Buffelgrass Genotypes in the Semi‐Arid Region of Brazil

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 2, April 2026.
Forage improvement in semi‐arid regions requires the identification of genotypes capable of maintaining productivity under climatic variability and chronic water scarcity. This study evaluated six buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) genotypes over two production years in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil, to characterize their agronomic, morphological, and ...
