Quantification of the number of adsorbed bacteria on an optical waveguide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
A simple method is presented for determining the number of bacteria adsorbed on a planar optical waveguide from measurements of a single effective refractive index.

Analysis the Reliability of Travel Time in Urban Corridors in Baghdad City

open access: yesJournal of Engineering
Travel-time reliability is a crucial performance measure for transportation systems. This research aims to estimate travel time and predict delay time on three routes in Baghdad city using GPS devices: Safi Al-Den Street, Palestine Street, and the Army ...

Associations of green space metrics with health and behavior outcomes at different buffer sizes and remote sensing sensor resolutions

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2019
Satellite data is increasingly used to characterize green space for health outcome studies. Literature suggests that green space within 500 m of home is often used to represent neighborhood suitable for walking, air pollution and noise reduction, and ...

A Buffer Value Index to Evaluate Effects of Buffers on Ruminal Milieu in Cows Fed High or Low Concentrate, Silage, or Hay Diets

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 1992
Our objective was to develop a buffer value index that would incorporate alterations in both ruminal fluid pH and buffering capacity as indicators of the influence of dietary buffering and alkalinizing agents on ruminal acid-base status. This index was evaluated using ruminal fluid from four lactating Holstein cows fed either sorghum silage or alfalfa ...

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Sea level rise, surface warming, and the weakened buffering ability of South China Sea to strong typhoons in recent decades

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Each year, a number of typhoons in the western North Pacific pass through the Luzon Strait into South China Sea (SCS). Although the storms remain above a warm open sea, the majority of them weaken due to atmospheric and oceanic environments unfavorable ...

Adaptive Downlink Scheduling Algorithm Based on Buffer Data for LTE-A Relay System [PDF]

open access: yesJisuanji gongcheng, 2016
This paper proposes an adaptive downlink scheduling algorithm for LTE-Advanced(LTE-A) relay downlink based on the buffer data, aiming at the problem that existing scheduling algorithms just simply perform priority ranking and cannot adaptively adjust ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Buffer capacity of solutions for estimating soil acidity

open access: yes, 1972
