How Significant Are Buffer Zones for Tourism at Urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

open access: yesHeritage
While the concept of a ‘buffer zone’ is clear and well defined, the role of the buffer zone is vague, especially because a buffer zone—if any—can take on very different sizes and shapes, while their status in terms of protection and rules is very ...

Nitrogen removal and the fate of Nitrate in Riparian buffer zones [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Riparian buffer zones, adjacent to waterways, may protect water quality by intercepting and removing nitrogen in runoff from agricultural land. This research comprised four parts: (1) a field study of nitrogen buffering by differently vegetated riparian ...

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Leucine‐rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a ganglioside‐binding protein

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neuronal hyperexcitability associated with a decrease/absence of the extracellular protein LGI1 has been suggested to be primarily due to the downregulation of Kv1 channel expression. The molecular mechanisms underlying this decrease have not yet been elucidated.

Using Drones to Estimate and Reduce the Risk of Wildfire Propagation in Wildland–Urban Interfaces

open access: yesApplied System Innovation
Forest fires have become one of the most destructive natural disasters worldwide, causing catastrophic losses, sometimes with the loss of lives. Therefore, some countries have created legislation to enforce mandatory fuel management within buffer zones ...

Research progress on world natural heritage conservation: its buffer zones and the implications

open access: yesHeritage Science, 2022
In recent decades, World Heritage Sites (WHSs) have faced external severe threats in the context of global economisation and urbanisation. The buffer zone as a conservation layer and management tool for WHSs has attracted increasing scholarly attention ...

Riparian buffer zones widths, windthrows and recruitment of dead wood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Riparian buffer zones, that is vegetated strips that are left surrounding streams, are today the general management practice to protect our running waters during forestry.

A novel quinazolinone insulin receptor inhibitor and its synergy with an EGFR inhibitor in glucose‐driven glioblastoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The novel styrylquinazolinone‐based molecule W1B effectively suppresses glioblastoma by inhibiting IGF1R and EGFR. In high‐glucose microenvironments driving tumor resistance, W1B acts synergistically with the EGFR inhibitor dacomitinib. This combination safely blocks compensatory survival signaling in zebrafish xenograft models. Showcasing promising in

Spatial scales matter in designing buffer zones for coastal protected areas along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Coastal protected areas are increasingly threatened by urbanization, posing significant risks to wetland biodiversity. Consequently, the recognition of buffer zones as essential for reducing anthropogenic impacts on protected areas has grown.
