Anaerobic fertilization of amphibian (Bufo arenarum) eggs

Experientia, 1976
Mature Bufo arenarum eggs, as well as body cavity oocytes of the same species, have been found to be fertilizable under anaerobic conditions. Anaerobic fertilization was obtained in a medium in which oxygen was replaced by purified nitrogen and in the presence of antimycin in concentrations assuring the complete blockage of respiration.

Effects of mGnRH on testicular steroidogenesis in the toad Bufo arenarum

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 2002
GnRH controls vertebrate reproduction in several ways. This hormone not only affects the secretion of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland but also has a direct influence on several gonadal functions such as steroidogenesis, spermatogenesis, and spermiation.

Action of FSH on the newly differentiated testis of Bufo arenarum

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1963
Abstract Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) injected into recently metamorphosed male toads brings about the transformation of solid cellular masses into testicular alveoli containing mature spermatogonia surrounded by typical follicular cells. A significant factor in the formation of alveoli is the accumulation of fluid.

Lethal and teratogenic effects of phenol on Bufo arenarum embryos

Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2009
Phenol and their derivatives are used in several industries and they have a high potential toxicity for animal and plant species. They were found in variable concentrations, as high as 1000 mg/L, in industrial wastewater and, they are often discharged into the environment. Amphibian embryos are useful indicators of environmental pollution.

Characterization of urea transport in Bufo arenarum oocytes

Journal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Comparative Experimental Biology, 2003
AbstractXenopus laevis oocytes have been extensively used for expression cloning, structure/function relationships, and regulation analysis of transporter proteins. Urea transporters have been expressed in Xenopus oocytes and their properties have been described.

Renin-angiotensin system and sodium homeostasis in Bufo arenarum

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1971
1. 1. The possible relationship between the renin-angiotensin system and sodium homeostasis inBufo arenarum has been explored. 2. 2. Plasma sodium concentration decreases in toads submitted to (a) distilled water for 60 days, (b) peritoneal dialysis, (c) furosemide administration. No significant changes in renal renin-content were found. 3.

Spermatolysins in Bufo arenarum: Their activity on oocyte surface

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1989
AbstractThe activity of spermatolysins from Bufo arenarum spermatozoa on spawned dejellied oocytes is studied at structural and ultrastructural levels. After adding spermatolysins to spawned dejellied oocytes, a wrinkling of the animal hemisphere is first observed under a stereomicroscope.

Natural Hybridization between the Toads Bufo arenarum and Bufo spinulosus in Argentina

American Midland Naturalist, 1970
Natural hybridization is reported for the first time be- tween the Argentine toads Bufo arenarum and Bufo spinulosus. A comparison of the parental species with the hybrid in regard to morpho- logical, behavioral and biochemical characters has revealed the inter- mediate nature of the hybrid.
