War Related Building Damage Assessment in Kyiv, Ukraine, Using Sentinel-1 Radar and Sentinel-2 Optical Images

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
Natural and anthropogenic disasters can cause significant damage to urban infrastructure, landscape, and loss of human life. Satellite based remote sensing plays a key role in rapid damage assessment, post-disaster reconnaissance and recovery.

EVOLUTIONAL BUILDING DAMAGE PREDICTION

open access: yesJournal of Structural and Construction Engineering (Transactions of AIJ), 2009
We hypothesized that the scale of the predicted Nankai Earthquake will increase gradually year by year as the time passes from the last occurrence in December 1946, and then we estimated strong motions chronologically from 2009 to 2060 for western Japan based on the up-to-date strong motion prediction method, i.e., the so-called statistical Green's ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Damage Detection of Structural Systems with Noisy Incomplete Input and Response Measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
A probabilistic approach for damage detection is presented using noisy incomplete input and response measurements that is an extension of a Bayesian system identification approach developed by the authors. This situation may be encountered, for example,

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Rapid large-scale building damage level classification after earthquakes using deep learning with Lidar and satellite optical data

open access: yesInternational Journal of Digital Earth
In post-earthquake scenarios, the swift assessment of building damage levels is pivotal for efficient emergency response and recovery planning. Nevertheless, conventional in-situ damage evaluations consume time.

Ground Loss and Static Soil–Structure Interaction during Urban Tunnel Excavation: Evidence from the Excavation of the Athens Metro

open access: yesInfrastructures, 2020
Ground settlement above urban tunnels is a threat for nearby buildings, because it may lead to their differential settlement, tilting, and damage, depending on their structural characteristics, on ground conditions, and on the excavation procedure. Still,

Future Flood Risk Exacerbated by the Dynamic Impacts of Sea Level Rise Along the Northern Gulf of Mexico

open access: yesEarth's Future, 2022
A growing concern of coastal communities is increased flood risk and non‐monetary consequences due to climate‐induced impacts such as sea level rise (SLR).

Validation of a coupled heat, vapour and liquid moisture transport model for porous materials implemented in CFD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Moisture-related damage is an important issue when looking at the performance of building envelopes. In order to accurately predict the moisture behaviour of building components, building designers can resort to Heat, Air and Moisture (HAM) models.
