Odor recognition and segmentation by coupled olfactory bulb and cortical networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1999
We present a model of a coupled system of the olfactory bulb and cortex. Odor inputs to the epithelium are transformed to oscillatory bulbar activities. The cortex recognizes the odor by resonating to the bulbar oscillating pattern when the amplitude and phase patterns from the bulb match an odor memory stored in the intracortical synapses. We assume a

A cohort study of duplex Doppler examinations of the carotid artery in primary open angle glaucoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Objectives To explore the possibility of pathological change in the common carotid artery at the bifurcation and in the internal carotid artery beyond the bifurcation which could contribute to a reduced diastolic pressure as observed in primary open ...

An improved method of preparing onion bulbs for the Alium test

open access: yesActa Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, 2014
The tests on storage and preparation of onion (Allium cepa L.) bulbs presented in this paper were performed in order to obtain the highest possible number of roots of similar length, which would be suitable for performing the Allium test.

An Illuminating Algorithm for the Light Bulb Problem [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
The Light Bulb Problem is one of the most basic problems in data analysis. One is given as input $n$ vectors in $\{-1,1\}^d$, which are all independently and uniformly random, except for a planted pair of vectors with inner product at least $\rho \cdot d$ for some constant $\rho > 0$. The task is to find the planted pair.

Chemiluminescent Tags for Tracking Insect Movement in Darkness: Application to Moth Photo-Orientation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The flight tracks of Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) flying toward a 5 watt incandescent light bulb were recorded under low light conditions with the aid of a camera-mounted photomultiplier and a glowing marker technique.

Miniaturized Devices for On‐the‐Spot Generation of Small‐Diameter Vascular Grafts

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
An intracorporeal extrusion device is developed for on‐the‐spot generation of vascular grafts with tunable diameters spanning from 1 to 6 mm. The device uses biomimetic polymers and light, to promptly obtaining biocompatible and high‐burst pressure‐resistant grafts.

Visible Light‐Promoted Esterification of Carboxylic Acids via Photoacid Generation Catalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Synthesis &Catalysis, EarlyView.
A novel, environmentally friendly photochemical method for the esterification of carboxylic acids with alcohols using arylazo sulfones as photoacid generators was developed. This approach avoids traditional acidic catalysts, purification did not require chromatography and the method proved effective under continuous flow conditions for enhanced ...
