Effects of similar-element-substitution on the glass-forming ability and mechanical behaviors of Ti-Cu-Zr-Pd bulk metallic glasses

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2018
The Ti41Cu31Zr10Pd13 (at.%) metallic glasses are promising for bone-implantation applications due to their exceptional bio-compatibility. However, Pd, as a noble element, keeps the fabrication cost high and prevents the industrial sale production of ...

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Behavior of Multiple Shear Bands in Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glass

open access: yes, 2005
The deformation behavior of Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass was studied by in situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) quasi-static uniaxial compression tests at room temperature. Multiple shear bands were observed with a large plasticity.

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Experimental and Numerical Modal Analysis of Composite Sandwich Structures Using Surfboards as Model Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents an experimental and numerical modal investigation of composite sandwich structures using surfboards as model systems. By comparing different core materials and reinforcement strategies, the study demonstrates how local stiffeners influence vibrational response and introduce characteristic modal features, highlighting modal ...

Saffman-Taylor fingering in nanosecond pulse laser ablating bulk metallic glass in water

open access: yes, 2012
We report for the first time the nanosecond pulse laser ablation of a typical Zr-based (Vit 1) bulk metallic glass in a water environment, paying attention to the target surface morphology after ablation.

Production of Bulk Metallic Glasses by Severe Plastic Deformation

open access: yesMetals, 2015
The aim of this study was to show the possibility to produce bulk metallic glass with severe plastic deformation. High pressure torsion was used to consolidate Zr-based metallic glass powder and deform it further to weld the powder particles together ...

Metallic Glasses Bulk Up [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Engineering, 1998
Vitreloy, a metallic–glass alloy of zirconium and beryllium from Amorphous Technologies International (ATI) in Laguna Niquel, CA, is extensively being used in golf clubs. Liquidmetal golf-club heads are fabricated from an amorphous metal alloy that has excellent rebound and vibration-absorbing properties.
