Metallic glass fiber-reinforced Zr-based bulk metallic glass
Scripta Materialia, 2011A novel Zr-based bulk metallic glass composite was fabricated using stainless steel capillaries as the reinforcement. Large plasticity (14%) was achieved in the composite with a reinforcement volume fraction of 38%. The high plasticity observed can be attributed to the formation of small glass fibers encapsulated by the steel capillaries, which ...

Bulk stiffnesses of metallic glasses
Journal of Applied Physics, 1982Determinations of density, Vickers microhardness, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio are reported for a series of Fe-B glasses, for glassy Fe40Ni38Mo4B18, and for glassy Cu68Zr32. From the last two parameters, one may calculate the shear and bulk stiffnesses of the glasses.

Tantalum based bulk metallic glasses
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 2011Ta-based bulk metallic glasses with high strength (2.7 GPa) and hardness (9.7 GPa), high elastic modulus (170 GPa) and high density (12.98 g/mm(3)) were developed. The best glass forming ability so far for a Ta-Ni-Co system reaches a critical diameter of 2 mm by the copper mold casting method. It shows an exceptionally high glass transition temperature

Zinc-based bulk metallic glasses
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 2010We report the fabrication and properties of zinc-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). The formation mechanism of the BMGs is also discussed. The combination properties of high corrosion resistance, low glass transition temperature T(g) and high formability, low Young's modulus and density, low cost, harmless components to organisms and tunable ...

Bulk metallic glass tube casting
Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2011Abstract Tubular bulk metallic glass specimens were produced, using a custom-built combined arc-melting tilt-casting furnace. Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 tubes with outer diameter of 25 mm and 0.8–3 mm wall thicknesses were cast, with both tilt and suction casting to ensure mold filling.

Aluminum-rich bulk metallic glasses
Scripta Materialia, 2008The formation and properties of a class of Al-rich bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are reported. The Al contents for these alloys can reach up to 40 at.%, which is the highest in known BMGs. The Al-rich BMGs deviate greatly from eutectic composition and show high thermal stability and fragility, and very high mechanical strength.

Bulk metallic superconductive La60Cu20Ni10Al10 glass
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 2005Abstract A bulk metallic superconductive La60Cu20Ni10Al10 glass with highly glass forming ability and large supercooled liquid temperature region is developed. The superconductive critical temperature determined by the electrical resistance and the specific heat measurements is 2.5 K.

Bulk Metallic Glasses: Aluminum-Based
2019This paper details a systematic investigation of the formation of Al-based bulk metallic glasses, expanding on an earlier brief report.[] We discuss an approach for designing and predicting the best glass-forming composition in the Al–TM–RE systems, based on the atomic cluster packing model for the internal structure of the glass.
