Although bundling can substantially increase profits relative to standalone pricing, particularly for zero‐marginal‐cost information products, it has one major problem: bundling produces revenue that is not readily attributable to particular pieces of intellectual property, creating a revenue division problem.

The attribute-based approach to study customer choices cannot deal with bundles of heterogeneous components, which are usually drawn from different product categories. The authors develop the comparability-based balance model, which is a unified framework for modeling bundle choices.

Abstract The selling of commodities in bundles is a strategy employed by sellers who face buyers with heterogeneous tastes. This paper demonstrates that the bundling of two goods may also be a response to price ceilings, even if both goods are subject to such regulations.
