Protective cellular responses to Burkholderia mallei infection
Microbes and Infection, 2010Burkholderia mallei is a Gram-negative bacillus causing the disease glanders in humans. During intraperitoneal infection, BALB/c mice develop a chronic disease characterised by abscess formation where mice normally die up to 70 days post-infection. Although cytokine responses have been investigated, cellular immune responses to B. mallei infection have

Molecular Insights into Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei Pathogenesis
Annual Review of Microbiology, 2010Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei are closely related gram-negative bacteria that can cause serious diseases in humans and animals. This review summarizes the current and rapidly expanding knowledge on the specific virulence factors employed by these pathogens and their roles in the pathogenesis of melioidosis and glanders.

Burkholderia mallei and Glanders
2019Glanders is a zoonotic disease mainly afflicting solipeds and caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia mallei. Unlike its evolutionary counterpart, Burkholderia pseudomallei, which can live for extended periods of time outside a host, B. mallei is a host-adapted intracellular bacterium capable of limited survival in the environment.

Capsular polysaccharides (CPSs) were isolated from O-polysaccharide deficient strains of Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei using a modified hot phenol/water extraction procedure. Glycosyl composition, methylation, MALDI-TOF MS analyses as well as (1)H NMR spectroscopy including COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HMBC and HSQC experiments identified ...

The Hamster Model of Intraperitoneal Burkholderia mallei (Glanders)
Veterinary Pathology, 1999Thirty-one female Syrian hamsters ( Mesocricetus auratus) were inoculated intraperitoneally with a lethal dose of Burkholderia mallei (Budapest strain). Hamsters were killed postinoculation on days 0 through 6. Lesions were first noted in the spleens on postinoculation day 1, and in mediastinal and mesenteric lymph nodes, mediastinum, liver, and bone ...

Burkholderia mallei (the etiologic agent of glanders in equines and rarely humans) and Burkholderia pseudomallei, causing melioidosis in humans and animals, are designated category B biothreat agents. The intrinsically high resistance of both agents to many antibiotics, their potential use as bioweapons, and their low infectious dose, necessitate the ...

Recent Patents on Anti-Infective Drug Discovery, 2007
Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei are the causative micro-organisms of Glanders and Melioidosis, respectively. Although now rare in Western countries, both micro-organisms have recently gained much interest because of their unique potential as bioterrorism agents.
