Burns area estimation—an error perpetuated

Burns, 2004
In estimating small areas of burns, it is traditionally taught that the patient's palm is 1% of the body surface area. Whether the palm means the palmar surface of the whole hand or palm excluding the fingers, has not been very clear and is a source of confusion to many junior doctors.

LEVITATION IN THE TREATMENT OF LARGE-AREA BURNS

The Lancet, 1967
Abstract In the treatment of large-area burns, patients can be supported on an air-cushion bed using pressures less than those which would obtain if supported in the normal way on buttocks and shoulders. The bed described consists of a series of air pockets which deform to the shape of the patient and maintain an air seal.

A new burn area assessment chart

Burns, 1987
A series of body charts have been designed that are more representative of changing body proportion with increasing age. Being easier to use, these charts have led to a better estimate by the casualty doctor of the body surface area that has been burned.

A System for Burned Area Detection on Multispectral Imagery

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2022
The current remote sensing (RS) open data policy for multispectral (MS) missions such as Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8, together with the availability of free cloud distributed processing platforms such as Google Earth Engine, makes it possible the quick generation of burned area (BA) products even for nonexperts in the field.

Burn disasters in shooting range areas

Forensic Science International, 2008

Our burn center accepted 7 of them.

Burns are more aggressive in the elderly: Proportion of deep burn area/total burn area might have a role in mortality

Burns, 2011
The objective is to identify whether epidemiologic differences in burns in the elderly lead to worse outcomes.Case control study. Patients admitted between October 2006 and September 2009, comparing over 65 years old (n=66) with under 65 (n=235). Studied variables: agent, inhalation injury, total burn surface area (%TBSA), deep TBSA, proportion deep ...

Hand burns surface area: A rule of thumb

Burns, 2018
Rapid estimation of acute hand burns is important for communication, standardisation of assessment, rehabilitation and research. Use of an individual's own thumbprint area as a fraction of their total hand surface area was evaluated to assess potential utility in hand burn evaluation.Ten health professionals used an ink-covered dominant thumb pulp to ...

Future Area Burned in Canada

Climatic Change, 2005
Historical relationships between weather, the Canadian fire weather index (FWI) system components and area burned in Canadian ecozones were analysed on a monthly basis in tandem with output from the Canadian and the Hadley Centre GCMs to project future area burned. Temperature and fuel moisture were the variables best related to historical monthly area

Burn epidemiology in the Brisbane and Queensland area

Burns, 2005
The aim was to evaluate changes in patterns of injury and whether mortality rates have decreased. The database over 20 years from 1982 to 2002 and the 6 years 1997 to 2003 was studied.4523 admissions. 73.7% males, 26.3% females. Monthly and seasonal admissions showed little fluctuation.
