Synovial Cysts, Ganglion Cysts, and Bursae

2023
Abstract: This chapter focuses on the classification and imaging of synovial cyst, ganglion cyst, and bursae. These lesions clinically present as a soft tissue mass and are often referred to the radiologist for further workup of a “soft tissue tumor.” They are however of nonneoplastic origin and have in most scenarios characteristic imaging features.

Synovial sarcoma arising in an anatomical bursa

Virchows Archiv A Pathological Anatomy and Histology, 1982
In previous studies, the origin of synovial sarcoma directly from synovium has not been satisfactorily established. This case report describes the light and electron microscopic features of a biphasic synovial sarcoma occurring within the popliteal fossa.

Bursa Formation and Synovial Chondrometaplasia Associated with Osteochondromas

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1981
Two adult patients who had synovial chondromatosis occurring within bursae formed around osteochondromas are described. In spite of marked cellular atypia of the cartilage cells, the clinical course was unremarkable, pointing out the discrepancy between histologic changes and subsequent behavior in this condition.

Two cases of synovial chondromatosis of the subacromial bursa

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, 2001
Synovial chondromatosis is a metaplastic condition that involves articular or tendon sheath synovial membranes in which multiple nodules composed of cartilage are produced.1 It can be found in the extra-articular bursae, such as the subacromial bursa,5 but few cases of this type have been reported.

Synovial Osteochondromatosis of the Retrocalcaneal Bursa. A Case Report*

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1996
Synovial osteochondromatosis is characterized by the formation of multiple osteochondral nodules arising from metaplasia of the synovial tissue. The most prevalent sites are the knee, elbow, and hip3,9,11,18,19. The disorder rarely occurs in the ankle or the foot2,17,22,27.

Synovial Chondromatosis of Pes Anserine Bursa Secondary to Osteochondroma

Orthopedics, 2014
Osteochondromas are common benign bone tumors. Synovial chondromatosis is a benign cartilaginous metaplasia that occurs in the synovium. The authors describe a unique case of synovial chondromatosis developing in the pes anserine bursa secondary to an underlying osteochondroma of the proximal medial tibia.

Synovial Osteochondromatosis of the Retrocalcaneal Bursa: A Case Study

Foot & Ankle International, 1999
A 42-year-old man presented with synovial osteochondromatosis (SO) of the retrocalcaneal bursa with intraosseous lesions in the calcaneum, leading to significant pain and consequent disability. Simple x-rays, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging were performed preoperatively.

Lexicon of synovial bursae.

Ortopedia, traumatologia, rehabilitacja, 2012
A synovial bursa (bursa synovialis) is a recess in the articular cavity, formed at a point where the fibrous layer of the articular capsule has become thin and the synovia is able to extrude beyond it. Many bursae lose their connection with the articular cavity they accompany. Their function is to enhance the sliding of muscles, tendons, and other soft

Extra-articular synovial chondromatosis in a prepatellar bursa

European Journal of Radiology Extra, 2007
Abstract We report a case of an extremely rare form of a localized extra-articular synovial chondromatosis in a prepatellar bursa. Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is an uncommon and benign disease of the synovium characterized by formation of multiple loose bodies, most of which subsequently become calcified and/or ossified.

Synovial chondromatosis of the subacromial bursa with rotator cuff tearing

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, 1995
Synovial chondromatosis is an unusual monoarticular condition of the synovial membrane of the joint and may occasionally involve the bursae and tendon sheaths. 5' 7. 9, 11, 12 Although the disease most often affects the knee, elbow, or hip joints, other joints such as the wrist, ankle, shoulder, and the small joints of the hand may be involved.
