Conserved proteins drive clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME), which from yeast to humans involves a burst of actin assembly. To gain mechanistic insights into this process, we performed a side-by-side quantitative comparison of CME in two distantly ...

LOFAR observations of a jet-driven piston shock in the low solar corona [PDF]
The Sun produces highly dynamic and eruptive events that can drive shocks through the corona. These shocks can accelerate electrons, which result in plasma emission in the form of a type II radio burst. Despite the large number of type II radio bursts observations, the precise origin of coronal shocks is still subject to investigation.

Testing the Modern Merger Hypothesis via the Assembly of Massive Blue Elliptical Galaxies in the Local Universe [PDF]
The modern merger hypothesis offers a method of forming a new elliptical galaxy through merging two equal-mass, gas-rich disk galaxies fuelling a nuclear starburst followed by efficient quenching and dynamical stabilization.

CONTENTION RESOLUTION IN OPTICAL BURST SWITCHES USING FIBER DELAY LINE BUFFERS [PDF]
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a circuit switching paradigm that provides very high throughput with reasonable delay. In OBS, the data burst size is not uniform and can be of any length.

Thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray bursts observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer [PDF]
We have assembled a sample of 1187 thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray bursts from 48 accreting neutron stars by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, spanning more than ten years. The sample contains examples of two of the three theoretical ignition regimes and likely examples of the third.

On the Continuous Formation of Field Spheroidal Galaxies in Hierarchical Models of Structure Formation [PDF]
We re-examine the assembly history of field spheroidals as a potentially powerful discriminant of galaxy formation models. Whereas monolithic collapse and hierarchical, merger-driven, models suggest radically different histories for these galaxies ...

Fast X-ray Transients and Their Connection to Gamma-Ray Bursts [PDF]
Fast X-ray transients (FXTs) with timescales from seconds to hours have been seen by numerous space instruments. We have assembled archival data from Ariel-5, HEAO-1 (A-1 and A-2), WATCH, ROSAT, and Einstein to produce a global fluence-frequency relationship for these events.

Heuristic solutions related to challenges of optical burst switching paradigm
Several optical network switching paradigms have been under intensive research to support rapidly increasing bandwidth requirements. Of all these paradigms, optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising switching paradigm for the next-generation Internet ...

Exploring SMBH Assembly with Semi-analytic Modelling [PDF]
We develop a semi-analytic model to explore different prescriptions of supermassive black hole (SMBH) fuelling. This model utilises a merger-triggered burst mode in concert with two possible implementations of a long-lived steady mode for assembling the mass of the black hole in a galactic nucleus.

Improved burst disk/cutter assembly [PDF]
Burst disk/cutter, prewelded before assembly, eliminates external leakage into a vacuum annulus and provides a means for more accurate burst-pressure prediction.
