Improving spike sorting performance of bursting neurons [PDF]
LAUREA MAGISTRALEPer comprendere come le reti neurali crescono, apprendono e sono in grado di svolgere le loro straordinarie funzioni, è fondamentale un metodo affidabile per monitorare la loro attività.

Mechanisms leading to bursting oscillations in the system of predator–prey communities coupled by migrations [PDF]
The purpose is to study the periodic regimes of the dynamics for two non-identical predator–prey communities coupled by migrations, associated with the partial synchronization of fluctuations in the abundance of communities.

It is well known that heteroclinic cycles can occur stably in the context of equivariant systems. For initial values near the cycle, one observes long time behaviour near an equilibrium and sudden bursts describing the travel along a heteroclinic connection. The goal of the paper is to construct feedback strategies to avoid bursting.

AbstractThe discovery of radio pulsars over a half century ago was a seminal moment in astronomy. It demonstrated the existence of neutron stars, gave a powerful observational tool to study them, and has allowed us to probe strong gravity, dense matter, and ...

Mechanisms for multiple activity modes of VTA dopamine neurons
Midbrain ventral segmental area (VTA) dopaminergic neurons send numerous projections to cortical and sub-cortical areas, and diffusely release dopamine (DA) to their targets.

Bursting dynamics in a spiking neuron with a memristive voltage-gated channel
We introduce a voltage-gated conductance model for an artificial neuron that exhibits tonic, fast, and two types of intrinsic burst spiking. The spike generation is achieved with a single voltage-gated channel that exploits the conductance commutation ...

Burst-by-burst adaptive joint detection CDMA [PDF]
Adaptive quadrature amplitude modulation (AQAM) is combined with joint detection code division multiple access (JD-CDMA) in order to increase the throughput of a communications system, while maintaining a target BER. The QAM modes are adaptively switched, by estimating the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the joint ...

Molecular Mechanisms of REM Sleep
Rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep is a paradoxical sleep state characterized by brain activity similar to wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement, and lack of muscle tone.

Noise-tuned bursting in a Hedgehog burster
Noise can shape the firing behaviors of neurons. Here, we show that noise acting on the fast variable of the Hedgehog burster can tune the spike counts of bursts via the self-induced stochastic resonance (SISR) phenomenon.

Understanding the Generation of Network Bursts by Adaptive Oscillatory Neurons
Experimental and numerical studies have revealed that isolated populations of oscillatory neurons can spontaneously synchronize and generate periodic bursts involving the whole network.
