Some early farm distillers disposed of their slop by dumping it into streams, killing fish, fouling the water, and drawing irate protests from neighbors. Nuisance abatement laws were invoked to combat the practice. Other distillers adopted livestock feeding systems that combined slop with hay and fodder.

The tremendous growth of the poultry industry is creating a large amount of offal and waste. If sufficient care is taken, this offal may contribute to animal feed as essential diet ingredients, thus replacing parts of other expensive feed ingredients. Poultry industries now exist in many countries and generate large amounts of residues.
